Science could still save the day

I wrote about global warming yesterday. Today, a new article states that apocalypse will never happen, that science could yet save the day. What are the big ideas scientist have to curb global warming? These are great ideas.

Capturing carbon
Carbon is removed from hydrocarbon fuels before they are burnt, or from power station emissions, and then buried.

Carbon scrubbers
Windmill-like machines that can remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Such machines could be located anywhere in the world.

Carbon sinks
It is hoped that sprinkling the ocean with iron filings would have a fertilising effect on marine plankton, a natural carbon sink, thus improving the absorption of atmospheric carbon.

Reflective clouds
The albedo (reflective power) of clouds could be enhanced by atomising sea water to produce tiny droplets that enter the clouds and make them more reflective, thus deflecting heat from the Earth.

Sulphate aerosols
Weather balloons, commercial aircraft or artillery shells would be used to release sulphate particles into the upper atmosphere, to reflect sunlight and heat back into space.

Mirrors in space
A giant folding mirror or a fleet of tiny aluminium balloons would be released into the upper atmosphere to deflect solar radiation before it reaches the Earth.

An amazing artwork made of words!

This is one artwork that is simply made yet captures my "weird" taste for art. I like the concept of forming the objects using their own names.

Thanks to link.

Statement of the Day

Statement of the Day: First Gentleman Jose Miguel Arroyo said yesterday he was willing to execute a waiver for Philippine monetary authorities to examine all his bank accounts here and overseas, if officials of Bayerische Hypovereins Bank in Munich, Germany confirm his multimillion dollar account as alleged by Taguig-Pateros Rep. Alan Peter Cayetano.

"Congressman Cayetano only knows how to sing one song, and that is, ‘Down with the Arroyos, oust the President and his fixation with destructive politics and black propaganda will be his downfall in the coming elections," Mr. Arroyo said.

Cool-Off MP3 and Lyrics: Yeng Constantino

Yeng Constantino's Cool-Off MP3 and Lyrics
*****
Wag ka munang magalit
Ako sana'y pakinggan
Hindi ko balak ang ika'y saktan
Hindi ikaw ang problema wala akong iba
Di tulad ng iyong hinala

REFRAIN 1
Sarili ay di maintindihan
Hindi ko malaman
Ano ba ang dahilan ng pansamantalang
Paghingi ko ng kalayaan
Minamahal kita pero
Kailangan ko lang mag-isa

CHORUS

REFRAIN 2
Wag mong pigilin ang damdamin
Sa aking pagkawala
Makahanap ka bigla ng iba
Ngunit pakatatandaan
Na mahal parin kita
Pero kailangan ko lang mag-isa

REPEAT CHORUS
ADLIB
REPEAT REFRAIN 1
REPEAT CHORUS
*****

Paris Hilton, a racist!

Diggin' this is saying no to racism! Just kidding. Or maybe that opening statement will work.

It was a couple of months ago when I saw that video of a stand-up comic who lost his temper on stage, raged uncontrollably and mentioned the "N" word. Watching the videos spreading everywhere online made me cursed that lighting would strike him that very instant and his soul be burned in hell. While everyone is trying to erase the ideological racism culture in this "hateful" society, there's the guy harboring hatred.

Racism is a global issue. "When racism is applied in practice, it takes forms such as prejudice, segregation or subordination. Racism can more narrowly refer to a system of oppression, such as institutional racism."

I know that here in the US, racism continues to this day. It is a well known issue here. "From racial profiling to other issues such as affirmative action, police brutality against minorities and the history of slavery and the rising resentment against immigrants."

Now, these two Hollywood stars named Paris Hilton and Nicky Hilton, yes, the Hilton sisters, have just awakened the issue all over again via a video. The words used were clear indications of them being racists.

"..any distinction, exclusion, restriction or preference based on race, color, descent, or national or ethnic origin which has the purpose or effect of nullifying or impairing the recognition, enjoyment or exercise, on an equal footing, of human rights and fundamental freedoms in the political, economic, social, cultural or any other field of public life."

I HATE public figures like them! Let's spread love guys! Let's spread LOVE!

Statement of the Day

Statement of the Day: Sometimes I do not understand the stand of Senate Minority Leader Aquilino Pimentel Jr. I like him as a senator. He has done a lot for the people. But this time he renewed his call for the deferment of the anti-terror bill until after the May 14 elections. He said that it is to prevent the administration from using it against its opponents.

I think this is so shallow an argument! We need this bill. We need an anti-terror law! Can everyone please just accept that?

"I am apprehensive that in a country like in the Philippines it is easy to see how a powerful instrument like an anti-terror law (Senate Bill 2137) will be used by those in power or by unscrupulous individuals to bludgeon those who don’t agree with them," Pimentel said.

Global warming, God help us!

A recent report states that the world temperature could rise by 4.5 C (8.1 F) if pollution doubles or if carbon dioxide levels double over pre-industrial levels.
I say, global warming must not just fall on deaf ears. In the many seminars given in class here in South Dakota, this issue of changes in the climate system always breezes in, like it's the hottest one in town. I think it must be!

Some sites are already giving early warning signs such as glaciers melting, ocean warming, sea-level rise and coastal flooding, heat waves and periods of unusually warm weather and some others. I now wonder if the unusual weather conditions we have in my very tropical country Philippines is also due to this issue. Or were the administrators at the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services sector not giving the Filipino people the real score?

Here is the draft:
The draft -- being discussed line by line at the four-day meeting of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change -- grimly states that the evidence for man-made influence on the climate system is now stronger than ever.

And carbon dioxide pollution spewed out this century will stoke global warming and sea-level rise "for more than a millennium," given the time it takes for fossil-fuel pollution to degrade, it says.

Among other things, the document declares it "very likely" that heatwaves and pounding rain will become more frequent, snow cover is projected to contract -- and typhoons and hurricanes will become less frequent but more powerful.
Help in whatever way you can. You can start by assessing your own contribution to the problem, by estimating your household's annual gas emissions. Think of how you reduce, reuse and recycle solid waste so you can decrease the amount of heat-trapping greenhouse gases you release at home. And there are still more.

How to sign up for GoogleTV beta

This is real guys! I don't think this is hoax. Read the post from TechCrunch:
A heavily produced YouTube video from Mark Erickson at “Infinite Solutions” shows users how to get in on the super-secret (and non existent) Google TV beta. It involves sending yourself an email and then logging in and out of Gmail multiple times until a tv icon appears in the Gmail logo. In the comments to the video, some users have tried logging in and out of Gmail hundreds of times without it working.

This is almost certainly a fake, as Google Blogoscoped reports. Erickson then posted a second video to prove the authenticity and saying that Google had increased the login requirements “substantially”. A+ for effort and originality. Both videos are below.

Wolverine

Not the one in X-men, guys. This is the real wolverine in the face of extinction.

The largest terrestrial member of the weasel family, the wolverine is a bear-cub-sized forest predator that persists in small numbers in the last remaining big wilderness areas of the lower-48 states. The powerful wolverine once ranged across the northernmost states from Maine to Washington, and south into the Adirondacks of New York, the Rocky Mountains as far south as Arizona and New Mexico, and the Sierra Nevada, Cascade, and Siskiyou Mountains as far south as California.

Today the wolverine is known to exist only in the northern Cascades of Washington and the Rocky Mountains of Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming. There, the remaining wolverines face growing threats. Despite their scarcity, wolverines continue to be lawfully trapped under Montana state law. Expanding snowmobiling and helicopter skiing are impairing wolverine denning habitat in high alpine basins. And the wolverine's wilderness habitat continues to be chipped away by logging, mining, and associated roadbuilding.

Recognizing these threats, the groups submitted a petition to the service in July 2000 asking that the wolverine be added to the Endangered Species Act's list of endangered and threatened species. However, in October 2003 the Fish and Wildlife Service rejected the groups' request for a full scientific review of the wolverine's status, which is the first step in the listing process, citing a lack of conclusive data. The Montana federal court's ruling overturns that decision. Read this PDF for more.

Sun Grant Initiative for Biobased Energy

Saturday, January 27, 2007

This coming week, Dr. Kevin Kephart, Vice-President of Research and Dean of the Graduate School at SDSU will give a talk on the “Sun Grant Initiative” - a national research program focusing on renewal energy. This is really timely as I was reading something about ‘Sinag,’ RP’s first solar-powered car, an answer to the Philippine's efforts to promote the use of alternative sources of energy.

The mission of the Sun Grant Initiative is to (1) enhance national energy security through development, distribution and implementation of biobased energy technologies, (2) promote diversification in and the environmental sustainability of, agricultural production in the United States through biobased energy and products technologies; (3) promote economic diversification in rural areas of the United States through biobased energy and product technologies; and (4) enhance the efficiency of bioenergy and biomass research and development programs through improved coordination and collaboration between the Department of Agriculture, the Department of Energy, and the land-grant colleges and universities.

A network of five land-grant universities serve as regional Sun Grant centers: South Dakota State University, Oregon State University, Oklahoma State University, the University of Tennessee - Knoxville, and Cornell University. Oregon State University hosts the Western Regional Center of the Sun Grant Initiative. Read more. You can also download a powerpoint presentation on Biobased Energy and Biobased Products.

Grand Unity Ticket: Philippine politics!

A "grand unity ticket" is being formed by the administration for the May 14 polls. The moves to form a unity ticket got a boost from Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC) chairman Faustino Dy Jr. who appealed to all political leaders to set aside their prejudices and unite for the sake of the country.

Who will be in the senatorial ticket? Vicente "Tito" Sotto III, Tessie Aquino-Oreta and former First Lady Imelda Marcos. What a team we've got here!

Don't forget to include Ilocos Sur Gov. Luis "Chavit" Singson and Optical Media Board head Edu Manzano!

IQ Test Scores: The Basics of IQ Score Interpretation

Friday, January 26, 2007

Tell me this is not true! There are a lot of people I know whose IQ are really low, yet, enjoying the luxuries in life. I have a fairly high IQ, yet, still struggling to find life's direction somewhere -- even blogging to at least earn some more. What do you think?
Descriptive Classifications of Intelligence Quotients

IQ Description% of Population
130+Very superior2.2%
120-129Superior6.7%
110-119High average16.1%
90-109Average50%
80-89Low average16.1%
70-79Borderline6.7%
Below 70Extremely low2.2%

Apparently, the IQ gives a good indication of the occupational group that a person will end up in, though not of course the specific occupation. In the book, Know Your Child’s IQ, Glen Wilson and Diana Grylls outline occupations typical of various IQ levels:

140Top Civil Servants; Professors and Research Scientists.
130Physicians and Surgeons; Lawyers; Engineers (Civil and Mechanical)
120School Teachers; Pharmacists; Accountants; Nurses; Stenographers; Managers.
110Foremen; Clerks; Telephone Operators; Salesmen; Policemen; Electricians.
100+Machine Operators; Shopkeepers; Butchers; Welders; Sheet Metal Workers.
100-Warehousemen; Carpenters; Cooks and Bakers; Small Farmers; Truck and Van Drivers.
90Laborers; Gardeners; Upholsterers; Farmhands; Miners; Factory Packers and Sorters.

Parents prefer sending kids abroad to study

Here is the report:
Because of the educational standards in the country, parents would rather send their children to colleges and universities abroad, the Coordinating Council of Private Educational Associations (COCOPEA) said.

COCOPEA, an organization of academicians from private universities and colleges, blames this on the tuition cap in private schools.

COCOPEA president Vicente Fabella said local colleges and universities are finding it difficult to improve their facilities and stem the influx of teachers to better paying schools abroad because of the ceiling imposed on tuition hikes.

Thus, he said even with almost the same cost of education in private schools here, parents would rather send their children abroad as it is perceived that they have better teachers and facilities.

Rep. Alan Peter Cayetano - Sparkplug of the Day!

According to Negros Oriental Rep. Jacinto Paras, the continued refusal of Cayetano to go to Munich to verify his accusations that First Gentleman Jose Miguel "Mike" Arroyo is keeping a secret bank account in Germany is nothing but a political ploy. "He is also afraid to go to Germany because of his legal liability for dragging the name of the German bank into a fictitious exposé."

He said Cayetano must finally reveal the truth. "Do you have the evidence or not? If there is, we should investigate it, if none, he should face the consequences," Paras said.

So far, none of Cayetano’s colleagues in the opposition have spoken in his defense.

Increased budget for training, scholarships and fellowships for teachers

Increasing the budget for public school teacher's training is a good move. I have been wishing ever since to improve the quality of education in the country. This can only be done with enough budget from the Philippine government and by producing quality teachers.

Our public school teachers now badly need capacity building. I would even suggest a mandatory continuing education. It might be costly for the government, yet this is for the best interest of all.

Here is the report:
The enactment of the P1.126 trillion national budget for this year would pave the way for release of P940 million for the training of public school teachers in math, science and English subjects, Budget Secretary Rolando Andaya Jr. said yesterday.

The amount for teachers’ "training, scholarships and fellowships" this year is P359 million higher than last year’s allocation, Andaya said.

He said this year’s allocation would allow the Department of Education (DepEd) to upgrade the skills of 171,617 English, math and science teachers and 4,882 school supervisors.

"They (teachers) in turn would conduct echo seminars for their colleagues," he said.

A component of improving public school teachers’ competencies in core subjects is the "TeleSerye Para Kay Ma’am," a television program for mentors for distance-learning method.

While teacher training will be a year-round activity, with teachers trooping to state colleges and in-service workshops, most of the participants will, however, take advantage of the summer school break to brush up on skills and earn units for a masters’ degree.

Viewing Saturn in 2007

January through July 2007 are the best months to view Saturn this year. The Earth and sun passed through Saturn's ring plane in 1995 and 1996, providing a nearly edge-on view of the rings. The ring tilt increased (opened wider) year by year to a maximum tilt of 27 degrees in early 2003. The tilt of the rings has been decreasing since 2003. The ring tilt decreases (closes slightly) each year until 2009, when we'll again see an edge-on, or nearly invisible view of the rings.

This years' ring tilt angle varies from 15.4 degrees down to 6.7 degrees. Saturn is brighter this year than it will be until 2015 due to slight dimming as the ring tilt becomes more narrow and Saturn's distance from Earth increases. The image of Saturn, taken at 2006 opposition, shows the bright zones and dark belts of Saturn's atmosphere. The dark Cassini division bisects the outer A ring and middle B ring. The subtle inner C ring is visible where it appears in front and center of the planet itself.

For more month by month details and to learn more about some of the other unique observations for 2007 visit the Saturn Observation Campaign.

Philippine private schools against tuition fee cap

I am with the private schools on their demand to lift the cap on tuition increases in all schools in the Philippines set by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED). It is true that limiting tuition hikes has badly affected the improvement of facilities and teachers’ salaries, which in turn has had adverse effects on the quality of education in private schools. But I am completely against over their tremendous increase of tuition every year. Sometimes the increase is just ridiculous.
In a press conference, Coordinating Council of Private Educational Associations (COCOPEA) president Vicente Fabella said the improvement of private schools has suffered due to the constraints that have prevented them from increasing their tuition and other fees.

Fabella said the consequences of the tuition ceiling cannot be felt until after four years, when this year’s incoming college freshmen have graduated.

"The effect will be very clear down the road. Students right now, when they graduate, are expected to have global skills — which means their skills must be good when compared with other countries even if they are working locally," he said.

Fabella pointed out that "if we limit the amount of money schools can invest in education, the skills won’t happen in four years (and) they will not be globally competitive."

He said their group is ready to have a dialogue with CHED officials on possible new guidelines to improve the quality of education, especially at the tertiary level.

Statement of the Day

Statement of the Day: Former President Corazon Aquino, who restored democracy in the Philippines after leading a 1986 "EDSA people power" revolt, turned 74 on Thursday, saying she never considered herself an ideal leader.

"People used to compare me to the ideal president, but he doesn't exist and never existed," The Philippine Star daily quoted Aquino as saying.

A New Seven Wonders of the World?

There are seven recognized wonders of the ancient world and only one has survived to this day, the The Great Pyramids of Giza. Recently, reports are saying about choosing the world's "new seven wonders". Huh! Why not retain the old list then come up with a new name for this next lot?

Egypt is fuming over a competition to choose the world's "new seven wonders," deriding it as a marketing stunt that demeans the pyramids of Giza, the only surviving ancient wonder.

"They are the only one of the seven wonders of the ancient world that still exists, it's ridiculous, they don't need to be put to a vote," Egypt's antiquities supremo Zahi Hawass was quoted as saying in local newspapers.

Culture Minister Faruq Hosni echoed the complaint, describing the project as "absurd" and its creator, Swiss-Canadian filmmaker Bernard Weber, as a man "concerned primarily with self-promotion".

Weber has embarked on a tour of the 21 short-listed sites but got a frosty reception in Egypt.

Tamaraw in Philippine Forests

Here is a report from the Philstar:
A unique dwarf water buffalo driven to the edge of extinction by hunting and deforestation is flourishing again in a rare success for conservationists.

Big-game hunters using helicopters and automatic rifles, and deforestation by settlers, loggers and ranchers pushed the tamaraw, or Bubalus mindorensis, among the ranks of the world’s critically endangered list by 1970.
By then its population in Mindoro had shrunk to 150, from about 10,000 in the previous decade, the environment department said on its website.

The government banned hunting of the animal, the largest mammal native to the Philippines, and in 1979 introduced a captive breeding program that has produced just one offspring with 19 of the 20 captured buffaloes now dead.

A strategic shift to habitat conservation through creation of a 25,000-hectare (61,776-acre) jungle reserve, as well as increased environmental awareness by residents, boosted numbers to 187 by 2001.

By the following year the total reached 253, and the latest official count is 263, "although the figure could even exceed 300 if reported loose sightings in the northern side of the Iglit Baco National Park are taken in."

"The tamaraws have definitely survived. In fact, with the continuous efforts of the government, concerned sectors and the Mindorenos (Mindoro residents), they may even begin to thrive," it added.

First documented in 1888, the mature tamaraw stands about three feet (0.91 meters) high at the shoulder and weighs 300 kilograms (661.39 pounds).

Two Days We Should Not Worry

Two Days We Should Not Worry (nice poem)
Author Unknown

There are two days in every week about which we should not worry, two days which should be kept free from fear and apprehension.

One of these days is Yesterday with all its mistakes and cares,
its faults and blunders, its aches and pains.

Yesterday has passed forever beyond our control.
All the money in the world cannot bring back Yesterday.

We cannot undo a single act we performed;
we cannot erase a single word we said.
Yesterday is gone forever.

The other day we should not worry about is Tomorrow
with all its possible adversities, its burdens,
its large promise and its poor performance;
Tomorrow is also beyond our immediate control.

Tomorrow's sun will rise,
either in splendor or behind a mask of clouds, but it will rise.
Until it does, we have no stake in Tomorrow,
for it is yet to be born.

This leaves only one day, Today.
Any person can fight the battle of just one day.
It is when you and I add the burdens of those two awful eternities Yesterday and Tomorrow that we break down.

It is not the experience of Today that drives a person mad,
it is the remorse or bitterness of something which happened Yesterday and the dread of what Tomorrow may bring.

Let us, therefore, Live but one day at a time.

Tips on Buying Interview Suits

First, decide what type of job you're interviewing for. What's the industry? Advertising jobs allow greater apparel flair than do investment banking jobs. Sales and traders can be more expressive than those in corporate finance; commercial bankers are more staid than investment bankers; and Silicon Valley jobs allow even greater variations in dress.

Second, allocate a day from your busy schedule to shopping. Focus your thoughts on the purchase of your suit. When shopping, men should wear shoes, trousers, and a dress shirt with a collar. If you try on a suit in a t-shirt and high-top sneakers, neither you nor your tailor will get a true picture of the fit. Women should wear a bodysuit under their blouse if they plan to try on blouse and jacket ensembles. A bodysuit will also eliminate the tuck-in problem during interviews.

Third, go to a store. Try on a variety of colors, patterns, sizes, styles, and cuts. Tell a knowledgeable sales associate that you need an interview suit for your specific industry. Try on an expensive suit, just to get an idea about its fit, the drape of its fabric, and the comfort of the suit and the fabric's finish.

Fourth, men should choose a wool suit. There are four major types of wool: Worsted, Tropical, Flannel and Tweed. Forget tweed, especially if you have a wide body. Concentrate on worsteds, flannels, and tropicals and their weights. Wool blends are blends among wools and other natural fibers or synthetics (synthetics are not natural, they are made from chemicals). Hartmarx, Fezza, and Hugo Boss use soft flannels. Read the tag on the suit's sleeve to discover the fiber content. MBA Style magazine recommends that men stick with a 100% wool suit for the interview suit. Women can choose wool, wool blends, linen, and a variety of natural and synthetic blends that mimic wool. Linens do not travel as well as wools, tweeds, and synthetics -- meaning they wrinkle quickly, so if you'll be getting callbacks that involve travel, you may wish to avoid linen.

Fifth, have a price range in mind, but try on suits with lower and higher price points.

Sixth, try on the suit. If it doesn't fit, don't buy it, even if it's on sale. Never sacrifice fit for color, fabric, or price. Don't get caught up in an embarrassment over the sizes. Sure, I'd like to be a 40 Long. But I am not. I am a 42-Long. Okay maybe even a 43. Same goes for women. Although a model, like Pamela Anderson, is a size 6, the average American woman is a size 10-12. As a matter of fact, the average American woman is 5 feet-4 inches tall, brown-haired, 143 pounds, with size 7.5-B shoes. Therefore, just forget about what size the tag says, and find a garment that fits right and projects the proper image.

Seventh, you can change a suit's fit, but not its design. Meaning, you can alter the sleeves and hems, but shoulders and lapels should not be changed. By the way, any alterations should be measured by the 1/4 inch, at least.

Eighth, look in a three-way mirror, no matter how painful it might be to see your big nose in profile, your butt, your bald spot, or the cellulite on your calves. Now, Men should check the suit from top to bottom in relation to the checklist below. Women can skip the part on trousers and sizes. More here.

The Digits of Pi

I only know 3.1416 as the value of pi. If truncated to 50 decimal places is:

3.14159 26535 89793 23846 26433 83279 50288 41971 69399 37510

While the value of pi has been computed to hundreds of millions of digits, practical science and engineering will rarely require more than 100 digits. Have you ever wondered the value of pi? Click here.

The current world record of memorizing the digits of pi is 100,000 decimal places, set on October 3, 2006 by Akira Haraguchi. That's a lot of numbers!

BBC Online World For Kids

Good news for all moms and kids.
CBBC, the child-friendly bit of the BBC, has announced plans to create a virtual world for kids, similar to Second Life. Kids will be able to create an avatar and explore a world which, unlike Second Life, will not involve cash, money laundering, shady property deals, political back-biting, corporate advertising (unless you count Coco Pops) or job-hunting. You may ask what’s the point but the Beeb thinks kids need a new outlet:

"It will give children a chance to move around a safe, secure world where they can not only interact with familiar characters but have an opportunity to make that world a more fascinating place with their own imaginations,” said Richard Deverell, controller BBC Children.

President Bush's State of the Union address

Tuesday, January 23, 2007

January 23, 2007 - President Bush's State of the Union address, complete text.

And tonight, I have the high privilege and distinct honor of my own, as the first president to begin the State of the Union message with these words: "Madam Speaker."

In his day, the late congressman, Thomas d'Alessandro Jr., from Baltimore, Maryland, saw Presidents Roosevelt and Truman at this rostrum.

But nothing could compare with the sight of his only daughter, Nancy, presiding tonight as speaker of the House of Representatives

Congratulations, Madam Speaker.

Two members of the House and Senate are not with us tonight, and we pray for the recovery and speedy return of Senator Tim Johnson and Congressman Charlie Norwood.

Madam Speaker, Vice President Cheney, members of Congress, distinguished guests, and fellow citizens:

This rite of custom brings us together at a defining hour -- when decisions are hard and courage is needed. We enter the year 2007 with large endeavors underway, and others that are ours to begin. In all of this, much is asked of us. We must have the will to face difficult challenges and determined enemies -- and the wisdom to face them together.

Some in this chamber are new to the House and Senate -- and I congratulate the Democratic majority. Congress has changed, but not our responsibilities. Each of us is guided by our own convictions -- and to these we must stay faithful. Yet we are all held to the same standards, and called to serve the same good purposes: To extend this nation's prosperity ... to spend the people's money wisely ... to solve problems, not leave them to future generations ... to guard America against all evil, and to keep faith with those we have sent forth to defend us.

We are not the first to come here with government divided and uncertainty in the air. Like many before us, we can work through our differences, and achieve big things for the American people. Our citizens don't much care which side of the aisle we sit on -- as long as we are willing to cross that aisle when there is work to be done. Our job is to make life better for our fellow Americans, and help them to build a future of hope and opportunity -- and this is the business before us tonight.

A future of hope and opportunity begins with a growing economy -- and that is what we have. We are now in the 41st month of uninterrupted job growth -- in a recovery that has created 7.2 million new jobs ... so far. Unemployment is low, inflation is low, and wages are rising. This economy is on the move -- and our job is to keep it that way, not with more government but with more enterprise.

Economy

Next week, I will deliver a full report on the state of our economy. Tonight, I want to discuss three economic reforms that deserve to be priorities for this Congress.

First, we must balance the federal budget. We can do so without raising taxes. What we need to do is impose spending discipline in Washington, D.C. We set a goal of cutting the deficit in half by 2009 -- and met that goal three years ahead of schedule. Now let us take the next step. In the coming weeks, I will submit a budget that eliminates the federal deficit within the next five years. I ask you to make the same commitment. Together, we can restrain the spending appetite of the federal government, and balance the federal budget.

Next, there is the matter of earmarks. These special interest items are often slipped into bills at the last hour -- when not even C-SPAN is watching. In 2005 alone, the number of earmarks grew to over 13,000 and totaled nearly $18 billion. Even worse, over 90 percent of earmarks never make it to the floor of the House and Senate -- they are dropped into committee reports that are not even part of the bill that arrives on my desk. You did not vote them into law. I did not sign them into law. Yet they are treated as if they have the force of law. The time has come to end this practice. So let us work together to reform the budget process ... expose every earmark to the light of day and to a vote in Congress ... and cut the number and cost of earmarks at least in half by the end of this session.

Finally, to keep this economy strong we must take on the challenge of entitlements. Social Security and Medicare and Medicaid are commitments of conscience -- and so it is our duty to keep them permanently sound. Yet we are failing in that duty -- and this failure will one day leave our children with three bad options: huge tax increases, huge deficits, or huge and immediate cuts in benefits. Everyone in this chamber knows this to be true -- yet somehow we have not found it in ourselves to act. So let us work together and do it now. With enough good sense and good will, you and I can fix Medicare and Medicaid -- and save Social Security.

Education

Spreading opportunity and hope in America also requires public schools that give children the knowledge and character they need in life. Five years ago, we rose above partisan differences to pass the No Child Left Behind Act -- preserving local control, raising standards in public schools, and holding those schools accountable for results. And because we acted, students are performing better in reading and math, and minority students are closing the achievement gap.

Now the task is to build on this success, without watering down standards, without taking control from local communities and without backsliding and calling it reform. We can lift student achievement even higher by giving local leaders flexibility to turn around failing schools and by giving families with children stuck in failing schools the right to choose something better. We must increase funds for students who struggle -- and make sure these children get the special help they need. And we can make sure our children are prepared for the jobs of the future, and our country is more competitive, by strengthening math and science skills. The No Child Left Behind Act has worked for America's children -- and I ask Congress to reauthorize this good law.

Health care

A future of hope and opportunity requires that all our citizens have affordable and available health care. When it comes to health care, government has an obligation to care for the elderly, the disabled, and poor children. We will meet those responsibilities. For all other Americans, private health insurance is the best way to meet their needs. But many Americans cannot afford a health insurance policy.

Tonight, I propose two new initiatives to help more Americans afford their own insurance. First, I propose a standard tax deduction for health insurance that will be like the standard tax deduction for dependents. Families with health insurance will pay no income or payroll taxes on $15,000 of their income. Single Americans with health insurance will pay no income or payroll taxes on $7,500 of their income. With this reform, more than 100 million men, women, and children who are now covered by employer-provided insurance will benefit from lower tax bills.

At the same time, this reform will level the playing field for those who do not get health insurance through their job. For Americans who now purchase health insurance on their own, my proposal would mean a substantial tax savings -- $4,500 for a family of four making $60,000 a year. And for the millions of other Americans who have no health insurance at all, this deduction would help put a basic private health insurance plan within their reach. Changing the tax code is a vital and necessary step to making health care affordable for more Americans.

My second proposal is to help the states that are coming up with innovative ways to cover the uninsured. States that make basic private health insurance available to all their citizens should receive federal funds to help them provide this coverage to the poor and the sick. I have asked the secretary of Health and Human Services to work with Congress to take existing federal funds and use them to create "Affordable Choices" grants. These grants would give our nation's governors more money and more flexibility to get private health insurance to those most in need.

There are many other ways that Congress can help. We need to expand Health Savings Accounts, help small businesses through Association Health Plans, reduce costs and medical errors with better information technology, encourage price transparency and protect good doctors from junk lawsuits by passing medical liability reform. And in all we do, we must remember that the best health care decisions are made not by government and insurance companies, but by patients and their doctors.

Immigration

Extending hope and opportunity in our country requires an immigration system worthy of America -- with laws that are fair and borders that are secure. When laws and borders are routinely violated, this harms the interests of our country. To secure our border, we are doubling the size of the Border Patrol -- and funding new infrastructure and technology.

Yet even with all these steps, we cannot fully secure the border unless we take pressure off the border -- and that requires a temporary worker program. We should establish a legal and orderly path for foreign workers to enter our country to work on a temporary basis. As a result, they won't have to try to sneak in -- and that will leave border agents free to chase down drug smugglers, and criminals, and terrorists.

We will enforce our immigration laws at the work site, and give employers the tools to verify the legal status of their workers -- so there is no excuse left for violating the law. We need to uphold the great tradition of the melting pot that welcomes and assimilates new arrivals. And we need to resolve the status of the illegal immigrants who are already in our country -- without animosity and without amnesty.

Convictions run deep in this Capitol when it comes to immigration. Let us have a serious, civil, and conclusive debate -- so that you can pass, and I can sign, comprehensive immigration reform into law.
Energy/Alternative fuel

Extending hope and opportunity depends on a stable supply of energy that keeps America's economy running and America's environment clean. For too long our nation has been dependent on foreign oil. And this dependence leaves us more vulnerable to hostile regimes, and to terrorists -- who could cause huge disruptions of oil shipments, raise the price of oil and do great harm to our economy.

It is in our vital interest to diversify America's energy supply -- and the way forward is through technology. We must continue changing the way America generates electric power -- by even greater use of clean coal technology ... solar and wind energy ... and clean, safe nuclear power. We need to press on with battery research for plug-in and hybrid vehicles, and expand the use of clean diesel vehicles and biodiesel fuel. We must continue investing in new methods of producing ethanol -- using everything from wood chips, to grasses, to agricultural wastes.

We have made a lot of progress, thanks to good policies in Washington and the strong response of the market. Now even more dramatic advances are within reach. Tonight, I ask Congress to join me in pursuing a great goal. Let us build on the work we have done and reduce gasoline usage in the United States by 20 percent in the next ten years -- thereby cutting our total imports by the equivalent of three-quarters of all the oil we now import from the Middle East.

To reach this goal, we must increase the supply of alternative fuels, by setting a mandatory fuels standard to require 35 billion gallons of renewable and alternative fuels in 2017 -- this is nearly five times the current target. At the same time, we need to reform and modernize fuel economy standards for cars the way we did for light trucks -- and conserve up to eight and a half billion more gallons of gasoline by 2017.

Achieving these ambitious goals will dramatically reduce our dependence on foreign oil, but will not eliminate it. So as we continue to diversify our fuel supply, we must also step up domestic oil production in environmentally sensitive ways. And to further protect America against severe disruptions to our oil supply, I ask Congress to double the current capacity of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve.

America is on the verge of technological breakthroughs that will enable us to live our lives less dependent on oil. These technologies will help us become better stewards of the environment -- and they will help us to confront the serious challenge of global climate change.

A future of hope and opportunity requires a fair, impartial system of justice. The lives of citizens across our nation are affected by the outcome of cases pending in our federal courts. And we have a shared obligation to ensure that the federal courts have enough judges to hear those cases and deliver timely rulings. As president, I have a duty to nominate qualified men and women to vacancies on the federal bench. And the United States Senate has a duty as well -- to give those nominees a fair hearing, and a prompt up-or-down vote on the Senate floor.

War on terror

For all of us in this room, there is no higher responsibility than to protect the people of this country from danger. Five years have come and gone since we saw the scenes and felt the sorrow that terrorists can cause. We have had time to take stock of our situation. We have added many critical protections to guard the homeland. We know with certainty that the horrors of that September morning were just a glimpse of what the terrorists intend for us -- unless we stop them.

With the distance of time, we find ourselves debating the causes of conflict and the course we have followed. Such debates are essential when a great democracy faces great questions. Yet one question has surely been settled -- that to win the war on terror we must take the fight to the enemy.

From the start, America and our allies have protected our people by staying on the offense. The enemy knows that the days of comfortable sanctuary, easy movement, steady financing, and free flowing communications are long over. For the terrorists, life since 9/11 has never been the same.

Our success in this war is often measured by the things that did not happen. We cannot know the full extent of the attacks that we and our allies have prevented -- but here is some of what we do know: We stopped an al Qaeda plot to fly a hijacked airplane into the tallest building on the West Coast. We broke up a Southeast Asian terrorist cell grooming operatives for attacks inside the United States. We uncovered an al Qaeda cell developing anthrax to be used in attacks against America. And just last August, British authorities uncovered a plot to blow up passenger planes bound for America over the Atlantic Ocean. For each life saved, we owe a debt of gratitude to the brave public servants who devote their lives to finding the terrorists and stopping them.

Every success against the terrorists is a reminder of the shoreless ambitions of this enemy. The evil that inspired and rejoiced in 9/11 is still at work in the world. And so long as that is the case, America is still a nation at war.

In the minds of the terrorists, this war began well before September 11th, and will not end until their radical vision is fulfilled. And these past five years have given us a much clearer view of the nature of this enemy. Al Qaeda and its followers are Sunni extremists, possessed by hatred and commanded by a harsh and narrow ideology. Take almost any principle of civilization, and their goal is the opposite. They preach with threats ... instruct with bullets and bombs ... and promise paradise for the murder of the innocent.

Our enemies are quite explicit about their intentions. They want to overthrow moderate governments, and establish safe havens from which to plan and carry out new attacks on our country. By killing and terrorizing Americans, they want to force our country to retreat from the world and abandon the cause of liberty. They would then be free to impose their will and spread their totalitarian ideology. Listen to this warning from the late terrorist Zarqawi: "We will sacrifice our blood and bodies to put an end to your dreams, and what is coming is even worse." And Osama bin Laden declared: "Death is better than living on this Earth with the unbelievers among us."

These men are not given to idle words, and they are just one camp in the Islamist radical movement. In recent times, it has also become clear that we face an escalating danger from Shia extremists who are just as hostile to America, and are also determined to dominate the Middle East. Many are known to take direction from the regime in Iran, which is funding and arming terrorists like Hezbollah -- a group second only to al Qaeda in the American lives it has taken.

The Shia and Sunni extremists are different faces of the same totalitarian threat. But whatever slogans they chant, when they slaughter the innocent, they have the same wicked purposes. They want to kill Americans, kill democracy in the Middle East and gain the weapons to kill on an even more horrific scale.

In the sixth year since our nation was attacked, I wish I could report to you that the dangers have ended. They have not. And so it remains the policy of this government to use every lawful and proper tool of intelligence, diplomacy, law enforcement, and military action to do our duty, to find these enemies, and to protect the American people.

This war is more than a clash of arms -- it is a decisive ideological struggle, and the security of our nation is in the balance. To prevail, we must remove the conditions that inspire blind hatred, and drove 19 men to get onto airplanes and come to kill us. What every terrorist fears most is human freedom -- societies where men and women make their own choices, answer to their own conscience, and live by their hopes instead of their resentments. Free people are not drawn to violent and malignant ideologies -- and most will choose a better way when they are given a chance. So we advance our own security interests by helping moderates, reformers, and brave voices for democracy. The great question of our day is whether America will help men and women in the Middle East to build free societies and share in the rights of all humanity. And I say, for the sake of our own security -- we must.

In the last two years, we have seen the desire for liberty in the broader Middle East -- and we have been sobered by the enemy's fierce reaction. In 2005, the world watched as the citizens of Lebanon raised the banner of the Cedar Revolution, drove out the Syrian occupiers and chose new leaders in free elections. In 2005, the people of Afghanistan defied the terrorists and elected a democratic legislature. And in 2005, the Iraqi people held three national elections -- choosing a transitional government, adopting the most progressive, democratic constitution in the Arab world and then electing a government under that constitution. Despite endless threats from the killers in their midst, nearly 12 million Iraqi citizens came out to vote in a show of hope and solidarity we should never forget.

A thinking enemy watched all of these scenes, adjusted their tactics, and in 2006 they struck back. In Lebanon, assassins took the life of Pierre Gemayel, a prominent participant in the Cedar Revolution. And Hezbollah terrorists, with support from Syria and Iran, sowed conflict in the region and are seeking to undermine Lebanon's legitimately elected government. In Afghanistan, Taliban and al Qaeda fighters tried to regain power by regrouping and engaging Afghan and NATO forces. In Iraq, al Qaeda and other Sunni extremists blew up one of the most sacred places in Shia Islam -- the Golden Mosque of Samarra. This atrocity, directed at a Muslim house of prayer, was designed to provoke retaliation from Iraqi Shia -- and it succeeded. Radical Shia elements, some of whom receive support from Iran, formed death squads. The result was a tragic escalation of sectarian rage and reprisal that continues to this day.

This is not the fight we entered in Iraq, but it is the fight we are in. Every one of us wishes that this war were over and won. Yet it would not be like us to leave our promises unkept, our friends abandoned, and our own security at risk. Ladies and gentlemen: On this day, at this hour, it is still within our power to shape the outcome of this battle. So let us find our resolve, and turn events toward victory.

Iraq

We are carrying out a new strategy in Iraq -- a plan that demands more from Iraq's elected government, and gives our forces in Iraq the reinforcements they need to complete their mission. Our goal is a democratic Iraq that upholds the rule of law, respects the rights of its people, provides them security, and is an ally in the war on terror.

In order to make progress toward this goal, the Iraqi government must stop the sectarian violence in its capital. But the Iraqis are not yet ready to do this on their own. So we are deploying reinforcements of more than 20,000 additional soldiers and Marines to Iraq. The vast majority will go to Baghdad, where they will help Iraqi forces to clear and secure neighborhoods, and serve as advisers embedded in Iraqi Army units. With Iraqis in the lead, our forces will help secure the city by chasing down terrorists, insurgents, and roaming death squads. And in Anbar province -- where al Qaeda terrorists have gathered and local forces have begun showing a willingness to fight them -- we are sending an additional 4,000 United States Marines, with orders to find the terrorists and clear them out. We did not drive al Qaeda out of their safe haven in Afghanistan only to let them set up a new safe haven in a free Iraq.

The people of Iraq want to live in peace, and now is the time for their government to act. Iraq's leaders know that our commitment is not open ended. They have promised to deploy more of their own troops to secure Baghdad -- and they must do so. They have pledged that they will confront violent radicals of any faction or political party. They need to follow through, and lift needless restrictions on Iraqi and Coalition forces, so these troops can achieve their mission of bringing security to all of the people of Baghdad. Iraq's leaders have committed themselves to a series of benchmarks to achieve reconciliation -- to share oil revenues among all of Iraq's citizens ... to put the wealth of Iraq into the rebuilding of Iraq ... to allow more Iraqis to re-enter their nation's civic life ... to hold local elections ... and to take responsibility for security in every Iraqi province. But for all of this to happen, Baghdad must be secured. And our plan will help the Iraqi government take back its capital and make good on its commitments.

My fellow citizens, our military commanders and I have carefully weighed the options. We discussed every possible approach. In the end, I chose this course of action because it provides the best chance of success. Many in this chamber understand that America must not fail in Iraq -- because you understand that the consequences of failure would be grievous and far reaching.

If American forces step back before Baghdad is secure, the Iraqi government would be overrun by extremists on all sides. We could expect an epic battle between Shia extremists backed by Iran, and Sunni extremists aided by al Qaeda and supporters of the old regime. A contagion of violence could spill out across the country -- and in time the entire region could be drawn into the conflict.

For America, this is a nightmare scenario. For the enemy, this is the objective. Chaos is their greatest ally in this struggle. And out of chaos in Iraq, would emerge an emboldened enemy with new safe havens... new recruits ... new resources ... and an even greater determination to harm America. To allow this to happen would be to ignore the lessons of September 11th and invite tragedy. And ladies and gentlemen, nothing is more important at this moment in our history than for America to succeed in the Middle East ... to succeed in Iraq ... and to spare the American people from this danger.

This is where matters stand tonight, in the here and now. I have spoken with many of you in person. I respect you and the arguments you have made. We went into this largely united -- in our assumptions, and in our convictions. And whatever you voted for, you did not vote for failure. Our country is pursuing a new strategy in Iraq -- and I ask you to give it a chance to work. And I ask you to support our troops in the field -- and those on their way.

The war on terror we fight today is a generational struggle that will continue long after you and I have turned our duties over to others. That is why it is important to work together so our Nation can see this great effort through. Both parties and both branches should work in close consultation. And this is why I propose to establish a special advisory council on the war on terror, made up of leaders in Congress from both political parties. We will share ideas for how to position America to meet every challenge that confronts us. And we will show our enemies abroad that we are united in the goal of victory.

One of the first steps we can take together is to add to the ranks of our military -- so that the American Armed Forces are ready for all the challenges ahead. Tonight I ask the Congress to authorize an increase in the size of our active Army and Marine Corps by 92,000 in the next five years. A second task we can take on together is to design and establish a volunteer Civilian Reserve Corps. Such a corps would function much like our military reserve. It would ease the burden on the Armed Forces by allowing us to hire civilians with critical skills to serve on missions abroad when America needs them. And it would give people across America who do not wear the uniform a chance to serve in the defining struggle of our time.

Americans can have confidence in the outcome of this struggle -- because we are not in this struggle alone. We have a diplomatic strategy that is rallying the world to join in the fight against extremism. In Iraq, multinational forces are operating under a mandate from the United Nations -- and we are working with Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and the Gulf states to increase support for Iraq's government. The United Nations has imposed sanctions on Iran, and made it clear that the world will not allow the regime in Tehran to acquire nuclear weapons. With the other members of the Quartet -- the UN, the European Union, and Russia -- we are pursuing diplomacy to help bring peace to the Holy Land, and pursuing the establishment of a democratic Palestinian state living side-by-side with Israel in peace and security.

In Afghanistan, NATO has taken the lead in turning back the Taliban and al Qaeda offensive -- the first time the Alliance has deployed forces outside the North Atlantic area. Together with our partners in China, Japan, Russia, and South Korea, we are pursuing intensive diplomacy to achieve a Korean Peninsula free of nuclear weapons. And we will continue to speak out for the cause of freedom in places like Cuba, Belarus, and Burma -- and continue to awaken the conscience of the world to save the people of Darfur.
AIDS/Africa

American foreign policy is more than a matter of war and diplomacy. Our work in the world is also based on a timeless truth: To whom much is given, much is required. We hear the call to take on the challenges of hunger, poverty, and disease -- and that is precisely what America is doing. We must continue to fight HIV/AIDS, especially on the continent of Africa -- and because you funded our Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, the number of people receiving life-saving drugs has grown from 50,000 to more than 800,000 in three short years. I ask you to continue funding our efforts to fight HIV/AIDS. I ask you to provide $1.2 billion over five years so we can combat malaria in 15 African countries. I ask that you fund the Millennium Challenge Account, so that American aid reaches the people who need it, in nations where democracy is on the rise and corruption is in retreat. And let us continue to support the expanded trade and debt relief that are the best hope for lifting lives and eliminating poverty.

When America serves others in this way, we show the strength and generosity of our country. These deeds reflect the character of our people. The greatest strength we have is the heroic kindness, courage, and self sacrifice of the American people. You see this spirit often if you know where to look -- and tonight we need only look above to the gallery.

Dikembe Mutombo grew up in Africa, amid great poverty and disease. He came to Georgetown University on a scholarship to study medicine -- but Coach John Thompson got a look at Dikembe and had a different idea. Dikembe became a star in the NBA, and a citizen of the United States. But he never forgot the land of his birth -- or the duty to share his blessings with others. He has built a brand new hospital in his hometown. A friend has said of this good hearted man: "Mutombo believes that God has given him this opportunity to do great things." And we are proud to call this son of the Congo our fellow American.

After her daughter was born, Julie Aigner-Clark searched for ways to share her love of music and art with her child. So she borrowed some equipment, and began filming children's videos in her basement. The Baby Einstein Company was born -- and in just five years her business grew to more than $20 million in sales. In November 2001, Julie sold Baby Einstein to the Walt Disney Company, and with her help Baby Einstein has grown into a $200 million business. Julie represents the great enterprising spirit of America. And she is using her success to help others -- producing child safety videos with John Walsh of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Julie says of her new project: "I believe it's the most important thing that I've ever done. I believe that children have the right to live in a world that is safe." So tonight, we are pleased to welcome this talented business entrepreneur and generous social entrepreneur -- Julie Aigner-Clark.

Three weeks ago, Wesley Autrey was waiting at a Harlem subway station with his two little girls, when he saw a man fall into the path of a train. With seconds to act, Wesley jumped onto the tracks ... pulled the man into a space between the rails ... and held him as the train passed right above their heads. He insists he's not a hero. Wesley says: "We got guys and girls overseas dying for us to have our freedoms. We got to show each other some love." There is something wonderful about a country that produces a brave and humble man like Wesley Autrey.

Tommy Rieman was a teenager pumping gas in Independence, Kentucky, when he enlisted in the United States Army. In December 2003, he was on a reconnaissance mission in Iraq when his team came under heavy enemy fire. From his Humvee, Sgt. Rieman returned fire -- and used his body as a shield to protect his gunner. He was shot in the chest and arm, and received shrapnel wounds to his legs -- yet he refused medical attention, and stayed in the fight. He helped to repel a second attack, firing grenades at the enemy's position. For his exceptional courage, Sgt. Rieman was awarded the Silver Star. And like so many other Americans who have volunteered to defend us, he has earned the respect and gratitude of our whole country.

In such courage and compassion, ladies and gentlemen, we see the spirit and character of America -- and these qualities are not in short supply. This is a decent and honorable country -- and resilient, too. We have been through a lot together. We have met challenges and faced dangers, and we know that more lie ahead. Yet we can go forward with confidence -- because the State of our Union is strong ... our cause in the world is right ... and tonight that cause goes on.

God Bless.

Tips to Avoid Blushing

Blushing
It is not surprising that in today's "got to look good" society, facial blushing causes people a lot of pain. At its extremes, the embarrassment from blushing can become so acute that the sufferer avoids social contact. Talking to other people, whether in person or even on the phone, is often associated with blushing.

Here are some things you can do about it.

(Please note: Here we are talking about the common social blushing that nearly everyone experiences at some time. There is a condition called hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) that is often treated with surgery. Normal blushing does not require such an extreme solution.)

So Why Do We Blush?

The first thing to understand is that blushing is a perfectly natural thing. It seems to be nature's way of disclosing our true feelings about a situation. Some have theorised that blushing is naturally attractive as it is safer in evolutionary terms to have a partner that cannot lie without detection. (Of course this is not fail-safe!)

Tips to Avoid Blushing
Relax Out of It

Blushing tends to get worse at first as people start to get embarrassed about their embarrassment, creating a sort of vicious circle. The more tense you get as you start to blush, the more the blood is forced to the face. One trick is, when you feel it coming on, to deliberately drop your shoulders, relax your body, and push your stomach out. This takes a bit of doing at first, so you might want to practice.

Announce It, Don't Hide It

One thing that allows the circle to continue is the 'hiding' of it by the blusher. I used to blush much more than I do now (most people do from time to time). The way I dealt with it, and a way that has helped clients of mine, was to announce it when it was about to happen. "Here we go, I'm going to go red now" or "Oh, I think I might blush".

Accept It, Don't Fight It

You need to shift your relationship to the blushing. At the moment you are trying to hide it because you are embarrassed about it. If you can work on relaxing about it, it will get better. This will be helped by you accepting it as a current part of yourself. You can try saying to yourself "At the moment, I am a blusher". I t sounds strange, but if you can bring yourself to like that part of you more, it is more likely to go away!

Other Peoples' Opinions

Part of the embarrassment about blushing is caused by the thought that others will see you as weak or silly. However, everyone has had the experience of being embarrassed, and it's not nice for anyone. Any decent person will be sympathetic about it. Anyone who thinks less of you for it is most probably not worth knowing anyway!

Retrain Your Body

Self hypnosis can help greatly as you can train your body to relax as you feel the blushing coming on, or have the thought that you might blush. If you do any relaxation techniques such as yoga or meditation, once you are really relaxed imagine the feeling of the blushing and have yourself relax with it. Practice feeling accepting towards yourself as you feel it coming on. You can imagine how you would feel if you saw someone else suffering the same way, and then feel that way towards yourself. Top supplements for sports and fitness

Looking to improve your performance in the gym? Here are some supplements that may help.

Antioxidants
Antioxidants such as vitamin C, vitamin E, CoQ10, glutathione, and alpha lipoic acid are important supplements for everyone, but especially for those who exercise on a regular basis. The rational is that exercise is a highly oxidative process and, as a consequence, produces free radicals from aerobic metabolism. Antioxidant compounds help alleviate this process.
Learn more.

Branched-chain amino acids
The branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) are leucine, isoleucine, and valine. BCAAs are considered essential amino acids because human beings cannot survive unless these amino acids are present in the diet. Learn more.

Calcium
Calcium is the most abundant, essential mineral in the human body. Of the two to three pounds of calcium contained in the average body, 99% is located in the bones and teeth. Calcium is needed to form bones and teeth and is also required for blood clotting, transmission of signals in nerve cells, and muscle contraction. The importance of calcium for preventing osteoporosis is probably its most well-known role. Learn more.

Soy
Soy, a staple food in many Asian countries, contains valuable constituents, including protein, isoflavones, saponins, and phytosterols. Soy protein provides essential amino acids. When eaten with rice, soy provides protein comparable with that found in animal products. Soy is low in fat and cholesterol-free. Learn more.

Vitamin C
Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin that has a number of biological functions. Learn more.

Whey Protein
Whey protein is a mixture of some of the proteins naturally found in milk. The major proteins found in whey protein include beta-lactoglobulin and alpha-lactalbumin. Whey protein has one of the highest protein digestibility-corrected amino acid scores (PDCAAS; a measure of protein bioavailability) and is more rapidly digested than other proteins, such as casein (another milk protein). Learn more.

Zinc
Zinc is an essential mineral that is a component of more than 300 enzymes needed to repair wounds, maintain fertility in adults and growth in children, synthesize protein, help cells reproduce, preserve vision, boost immunity, and protect against free radicals, among other functions. Learn more.

What is a Lichtenberg Figure ?

Lichtenberg Figures (Lichtenbergischestaubfiguren, or "Lichtenbergian Dust Figures") are branching electric discharges (or electrical trees) that are sometimes preserved on the surface or the interior of a solid dielectric. They are named after the German physicist Georg Christoph Lichtenberg, who originally discovered and studied them. In 1777, Lichtenberg built a large Electrophorus in order to generate high voltage static electricity through induction.

With it, he discovered the basic principle of modern Xerography copy machine technology. By discharging a high voltage point near an insulator, he was able to record the resulting radial pattern in fixed dust. Lichtenberg figures are considered today to be examples of fractals. This discovery was also the forerunner of modern day Plasma Physics. When they were first discovered, it was thought that their characteristic shapes might help to reveal the nature of positive and negative electric "fluids". Images from teslamania.

Single Photon for Ultra-Dense Optical Storage

Researchers at the University of Rochester have made an optics breakthrough that allows them to encode an entire image's worth of data into a photon, slow the image down for storage, and then retrieve the image intact. While the initial test image consists of only a few hundred pixels, a tremendous amount of information can be stored with the new technique.

The image, a "UR" for the University of Rochester, was made using a single pulse of light and the team can fit as many as a hundred of these pulses at once into a tiny, four-inch cell. Squeezing that much information into so small a space and retrieving it intact opens the door to optical buffering—storing information as light.

"It sort of sounds impossible, but instead of storing just ones and zeros, we're storing an entire image," says John Howell, assistant professor of physics and leader of the team that created the device, which is revealed in today's online issue of the journal Physical Review Letters. "It's analogous to the difference between snapping a picture with a single pixel and doing it with a camera—this is like a 6-megapixel camera."

"You can have a tremendous amount of information in a pulse of light, but normally if you try to buffer it, you can lose much of that information," says Ryan Camacho, Howell's graduate student and lead author on the article. "We're showing it's possible to pull out an enormous amount of information with an extremely high signal-to-noise ratio even with very low light levels."

Optical buffering is a particularly hot field right now because engineers are trying to speed up computer processing and network speeds using light, but their systems bog down when they have to convert light signals to electronic signals to store information, even for a short while.

"The parallel amount of information John has sent all at once in an image is enormous in comparison to what anyone else has done before."

Howell's group used a completely new approach that preserves all the properties of the pulse. The buffered pulse is essentially a perfect original; there is almost no distortion, no additional diffraction, and the phase and amplitude of the original signal are all preserved. Howell is even working to demonstrate that quantum entanglement remains unscathed.

To produce the UR image, Howell simply shone a beam of light through a stencil with the U and R etched out. Anyone who has made shadow puppets knows how this works, but Howell turned down the light so much that a single photon was all that passed through the stencil.

Quantum mechanics dictates some strange things at that scale, so that bit of light could be thought of as both a particle and a wave. As a wave, it passed through all parts of the stencil at once, carrying the "shadow" of the UR with it. The pulse of light then entered a four-inch cell of cesium gas at a warm 100 degrees Celsius, where it was slowed and compressed, allowing many pulses to fit inside the small tube at the same time.

"The parallel amount of information John has sent all at once in an image is enormous in comparison to what anyone else has done before," says Alan Willner, professor of electrical engineering at the University of Southern California and president of the IEEE Lasers and Optical Society. "To do that and be able to maintain the integrity of the signal—it's a wonderful achievement."

Howell has so far been able to delay light pulses 100 nanoseconds and compress them to 1 percent of their original length. He is now working toward delaying dozens of pulses for as long as several milliseconds, and as many as 10,000 pulses for up to a nanosecond.

"Now I want to see if we can delay something almost permanently, even at the single photon level," says Howell. "If we can do that, we're looking at storing incredible amounts of information in just a few photons."

60,000 defective Philippine textbooks

Corruption in action. That is how I see the production of 60,000 defective textbooks. The number may even be greater than what is reported. Do you believe this is just one-half of one percent of about 12 million total number of textbooks, as Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Jesli Lapus said? I doubt it. I am sure something fishy is going on somewhere, resulting to this waste of people's money.

The textbooks’ defects include inverted or wrinkled pages, and incomplete trimmings.

"Any defective deliveries are rejected. Further, contract has a one- year warranty. Everything is transparent and normal. We have with us more than 30 civil society organizations who help us in the yearly delivery to determine the quality of the textbooks," Lapus said.

Getting Letters of Recommendation

The best advice around: start early -- months earlier than you will need them if possible. Often the same person you ask to write a letter will be asked to write on behalf of several other people as well. It takes a lot of time to write a good letter of recommendation and as it's never the first priority for the writer. Don't be surprised if it takes longer to get the letter than you think it should. Be prepared to wait. Read more "When Asking for a Letter of Recommendation".

Filipino nurses seeking US employment up by 65%

My previous post about high growth careers mentioned the Registered Nurse as the career that will create more new jobs than for any other occupation through 2012. Yes, registered nurses constitute the largest healthcare occupation, with 2.3 million jobs.

It is not new to me to read that Filipino nurses are seeking employment in the United States - the US is where the money is. Although other countries could also provide the same compensation, the concept that there is a better life in the US than anywhere is, has already been rooted deep in our conscience. Isn't Uncle Sam always the Filipino savior?

A report says:
Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP) secretary-general and former senator Ernesto Herrera said that over 15,000 new Filipino nurses sought employment in the US — a figure that is 65 percent higher than the number of nurses who sought jobs in the US in the previous year.
"A total of 15,171 Filipinos took the US National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) for nurses and this represents an increase of 5,990 or 65 percent compared to the 9,181 Filipinos that took the NCLEX for the first time in the whole of 2005," Herrera said.

The Philippines topped the list of five countries with the highest number of first-time NCLEX examinees in 2006. India came second, with 4,395 examinees; followed by South Korea, with 2,145; Canada, with 943; and Cuba, with 537.

"Passing the NCLEX is usually the final step in the nurse licensure process in the US," Herrera said. "The number of people taking the examination is a good indicator of how many new US-educated as well as foreign-trained nurses are trying to enter the profession in the US, according to the US National Council of State Boards of Nursing." 156 Things I did to survive one year of blogging!

Saturday, January 20, 2007

This is basically the blog story, presented in days, of how I started and what I exactly did, to make it to January 26, 2007 – the day I’ll turn one year old as a blogger.

1. It started with my friendster blog. This is a social site similar to myspace.

2. It didn't last long after I found out about blogger.

3. January 26, 2006, I signed up for a blogger account after reading this article of why I should go for blogger.

4. I do not have any html expertise nor any idea how my template would look like. All I wanted was to start a blog.

5. The first template I used.

6. My first post was about a Civil Engineering student, who was under me in a couple of years ago, and was beaten to death by a gang of males after his night class. It generated 2 comments from 2 of my closest friends. Not bad.

7. Happy of my first post, I re-posted one of my articles that was published in a local weekly magazine...got 2 comments from 2 other friends. Not bad again.

8. Each day I posted one article and never cared much what they were about.

9. What a Mother Cannot Do was the first entry that encouraged me to write more. It was about a colleague of mine whose son is suffering from an unknown disease.

10. February 2006 was the month I began to take blogging seriously. I cannot leave my desk without posting anything.

11. I wrote about a stampede that killed 80 people - people who risked their lives just to make both ends meet and to survive the adversities of living less than a dollar a day.

12. Wrote how I wanted to win a Million Pesos!

13. Even posted the piece which won for me the Grand Prize in the Water Remind Essay Writing.

14. My Valentine's Day post created a stir.

15. So I had a follow-up post.

16. Created a post how to survive lonely days.

17. And posted the names of all the girls I loved before. One commented why her name wasn't there. I realized late that I forgot to place hers. She cut our friendship after that.

18. There were times that I couldn't think of anything. I wrote about Mom and her singing prowess.

19. I had an article about PEOPLE POWER - how former Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos was overthrown through a gun-less revolution just to stop his 20-year dictatorship.

20. In between the postings and reading and answering comments, I browsed through other blogs.

21. I found out that I could actually monetize my blog.

22. Read, read, read and read more and landed on the Google Adsense site.

23. Signed up for an account and few days later I had Adsense displayed on my pages.

24. First, I didn't change the location of the Ads and completely accepted the blogger's default for Adsense. It was on top.

25. I blogged in the office for a couple of hours (after my classes in the evening).

26. Continued blogging at home.

27. Slept at around 2 AM.

28. The month of March was a month of tragedies in the Philippines. I wrote something about it.

29. An article of my addiction to blogging.

30. Wrote my first poem.

31. Three days after the Ads were placed, not a single cent was generated.

32. Extremely frustrated!

33. However, the fourth day changed my mood 360 degrees. I earned my first few cents.

34. During the first month, I only had less than 100 page impressions (I suspect, most of the impressions were from my own visits).

35. In March, it went up to around 200 to 300 impressions due to some side comments I did in class. Students started to read my blog.

36. Adsense earnings at times went back to nothing a day. There was even 10 straight days of $0, even if the blog got 300 daily impressions.

37. Never surrendered the will to become a blogger. That's the attitude dude!

38. I read more online and found out that I could have more blogs and more Adsense placed on them.

39. Second blog came up. It wasn't impressive. Nah! I stopped posting after few months.

40. Even with my two blogs, Adsense wasn't so good to me.

41. Became frustrated again.

42. Browsed for more online articles and took notice of other bloggers' advice "Enlist your blog in online directories."

43. Started with Topblogsites.net.

44. Then blogrankings.com.

45. Then blogtagstic.com.

46. Then web.blogranking.us

47. Then bloggersblog.com.

48. Then blogroll.net.

49. Then worldblogrank.com.

50. Then blogtopsites.com.

51. Then addurlblog.com.

52. Then dir.blogflux.com.

53. Then internetlisted.net.

54. Then top100bloggers.com.

55. Then a local ranking site, pinoytopblogs.com.

56. I know I listed to more than 50 directory sites around the world. Now, I don't even remember the sites. I deleted many of the links on my pages after they started to look like a carnival with all those colorful buttons on my sidebar.

57. Earnings were negligible. A dollar a day was not enough.

58. Read 5 Surefire Ways to Increase Google Adsense Earnings.

59. I followed the steps and observed the results.

60. It worked. Earnings increased to few more cents.

61. I posted articles about American Idol, just to invite traffic.

62. Thought of posting lots of popular song lyrics and mp3 downloads.

63. I downloaded and used PICASA to manage my photo postings.

64. Posted some funny pictures and invited visitors to contribute. No one did.

65. Then started posting about sex.

66. Someone suggested I should place a counter on my site.

67. I did post comments in other blogs to invite traffic.

68. The first 4 blogger friends I met online: 1, 2, 3, 4

69. Signed up for Blogmad.net

70. Then Blogarama.com.

71. Then Blogexplosion.

72. Then Blogclicker.

73. Then Blogsoldiers.

74. Then after a couple of weeks, I read something about the Adsense fraud clicks due to manual surfing sites. I wrote about it.

75. Confirmed by many, and confirmed by Google, I immediately took my blogs out of the rotation.

76. To all those who managed to read up to this point, do not -- yes, do not-- enlist your blog in sites like no.69 to no.73 just to increase your traffic and Adsense earnings. Doing so would lead to cancellation of your Adsense account.

77. I posted love letters.

78. Enjoyed my 35,000th visitor!

79. Placed a chatbox for visitors to leave a tag.

80. In April 2006, I started the Filipino Blog of the Week, to keep the Filipino blogging community always alive (and to gain traffic too).

81. I joined pinoyexchange.com. A Filipino forum.

82. The Sex Education post was the most commented one.

83. Started to chat with bloggers from the Philippines.

84. Links were exchanged.

85. Changed to a new layout - this layout - but with different colors.

86. Experimented with banners.

87. Learned how to use Photoshop.

88. I thought of earning through some other ways, like Adgenta.com.

89. Enlisted myself in technorati.com. This site generated so much traffic to my blog.

90. I even tried to have an account at travelpost to promote my site.

91. I created a Blue-Blooded Blogger (BBB) badge for everyone to use. As of now, a number of bloggers are displaying it on their blogs. Thank you!

92. Got an account from Chitika.

93. I wanted to trace my visitors and had a neoworx. My account expired so I had to remove the code.

94. I was (still is) listed in bloglines.

95. I created a poll for some of my blogs.

96. Google search engine started to index my pages.

97. Site statistics showed google and yahoo as the main generators of traffic.

98. Joined feedburner and invited visitors to my feeds.

99. I began to have email subscribers.

100. Posted about Vida Guerra, FHM's Top 100 Sexiest Women

101. Learned some blogger hacks.

102. Learned few html strategies.

103. Signed up for an Amazon account.

104. After months of blogging, I realized there were also some other blog platforms around.

105. Signed up for wordpress.

106. Didn't push through with the transfer to wordpress because of this.

107. I moved to the USA and continued blogging.

108. Discovered "submission sites" like netscape.com.

109. ...and Digg.

110. Monetize more my blogs via Adbrite.

111. ...and bidvertiser.

112. I created a new blogger account, forgot the password and left the account unattended.

113. I tried blogshares.

114. I tried blogadvance.

115. I tried fastweb (i do not even know what this is).

116. At this point my blog became a "kind of" commercial blog.

117. Still posted personal experiences, mostly derived from my daily reads.

118. Created an FAQ for my blog, which eventually became a blog for all my daily rants.

119. I thought I could come up with 1 million links in 3 months. I failed. It was an ambitious idea. See my million linky.

120. Few more months, this blog was already enjoying a place in the Technorati's Philippine Top 100 Blogs.

121. I added lots of blogs to my own blog rotation (see top portion here). You can add your link if you like.

122. Joined performancing.com. Another way to earn money.

123. The first post submitted to digg.com. Nobody dugg it. There is only one digg after 173 days (which was mine).

124. The most number of diggs I got was 8. This was the post.

125. The same first post was submitted to netscape and was soon deleted from the list. I don't know the reason why. Anyway, nobody voted for it though.

126. I tried submitting posts to Shoutwire, a community based internet news website. Nothing happened.

127. Tried care2.com too.

128. What about the myweb2.search powered by yahoo?

129. There was one more submission site I tried: grupl.com

130. I have banners reserved for different occasions: banner 1, banner 2, banner 3, banner 4.

131. For color contrast, I used this site and this site.

132. I discovered I could embed html videos from youtube, google videos, dailymotion to my blog.

133. I ran across an Adult Advertising Network that pays publishers like Google Adsense. But I didn't sign up for it.

134. Discovered more blogger hacks.

135. I also tried how to video blog with blogger.

136. I bought a new digital camera and tried its video capabilities. My first video posted (an ice skating adventure).

137. Installed Google page rank and I got a PR of 5.

138. Ran into blogger problems, like publishing errors and image uploading issues. Online forums were big help!

139. More visits to other blogs revealed techniques like Search Engine Optimization for Blogs - SEO.

140. I also followed this.

141. As I watched my blog going up the Philippine rankings, I was also taking note of one post from basangpanaginip that was dugg. Really dugg that his blog rose to no.2 spot in days. I wished that time it was mine :-)

142. Other blogs that are constantly giving me inspiration: no.1 spot -- Rickey and SEO Philippines Founder, Marc Hil Macalua.

143. My biggest earning from Amazon in one week was $160. That wasn't bad for just placing a little code.

144. I started using Google Analytics, rather than only trust data stats from sitemeter.

145. With the new blogger version in full action, I shifted all my blogs. No problems encountered during shifting so far.

146. Online friends suggested I should get my own domain.

147. I said no, for now. Blogger is doing good in all my postings.

148. I have been inspired at how "blogger" blogs like postsecret and xiaxue are faring so well in the Technorati Popular Blogs.

149. Boing-Boing's idea is simply awesome.

150. As of this posting, my visitor count is 141, 575 since January 2006.

151. This week alone I have over 10,000 unique visitors and over 23,000 pageviews. Not that much though, but I am very happy with it.

152. January 26, 2007 will be the day that I'll become a year older as a blogger. No regrets for the sleepless nights tinkering on html hacks.

153. January 18, 2007: I started this post by making a draft of all things I did for the past year.

154. January 19, 2007: I wrote and wrote and wrote.

155. January 20, 2007: Published the post and submitted to digg (hoping this time, it will be dugg), or approved by care2 news, or shoutwire, or myweb, or netscape.

156. I will now wait for January 26, 2007 to celebrate my blogger anniversary!

Hillary Clinton for President!

Hillary Rodham Clinton, the US Senator from New York and former First Lady, yesterday answered months of fevered speculation about her White House ambitions and formally embarked on what will be a historic campaign to become the first woman president of the United States.

The Senator, who only won re-election to a second six-year term as a US Senator last November, shot out of the starting gate with a feisty video-taped statement on her website, making clear her determination to sweep aside any competition in 2008. "I'm in, and I'm in to win," she declared.

The Student

Hillary Rodham Clinton studied political science at Wellesley College, where she was a president of the student Republicans. She then attended Yale Law School, where she met her future husband Bill in the university library. They were married in 1975 after moving to Arkansas.

Governor's Wife

After Bill became Governor of Arkansas in 1978, she continued practising law, specialising in intellectual property rights and child welfare. Chelsea was born in 1980. The couple were accused of involvement in a property deal that became known as the Whitewater scandal, but no proof of wrongdoing was ever found.

The Loyal Wife

During the 1992 presidential campaign, Hillary defended Bill against claims he had an affair with singer Gennifer Flowers. He later admitted the allegations were true. She was portrayed by Emma Thompson in the film 'Primary Colours' as ambitious, smart but rather prim.

The First Lady

As First Lady, Hillary was appointed in 1993 to head a taskforce on health insurance reform. The ambitious plan for universal healthcare was opposed by Republicans and the medical industry, and was abandoned in 1994. Her credibility took years to recover.

The Defender

After details of Bill's affair with Monica Lewinsky first emerged, Hillary initially defended her husband, blaming a "vast right-wing conspiracy". His eventual confession to her that the allegations were true were a profound shock, and she later admitted that the affair pushed her marriage to breaking point.

The Senator

In 2000, Hillary won the New York seat in the Senate for the Democrats, becoming the only First Lady to win elected office in US history. Political enemies accused her of having no links to the city, but Clinton beat Republican Rick Lazio by a large margin. Read more...

MySpace data phished and leaked

56,000 login details exposed by phishing researchers.

A large quantity of MySpace user login and password data has been posted online, according to some reports by researchers into phishing techniques available on the social site.

The data was apparently gathered via a spoofed login page linked to from the site, and over 56,000 sets of details made publicly available online. At least some of the details entered make it clear that some visitors spotted the phish and posted fake and even abusive login data. Various phishing filters, including Firefox, were quickly updated to warn users visting the site.

A link to the listing was later posted to the Full Disclosure security forum, claiming the 56,000 figure was still rising. Although the site hosting both the phish and the data has since been taken down, it is thought the data was exposed to numerous visitors and is still available elsewhere on the web. LINK to site.

Are you an Idiot

Test your intelligence.
The following four questions are designed to test your intelligence. You must respond to these questions immediately without hesitation. Say the first answer that comes into your head.

1: You participate in a race, you pass the runner in second place. Which position are you in now?
2: If you pass the last person in the race, which position would you be in?

OK, here's one to test your maths. Don't make any notes or use a calculator for this one. Good luck!

3: You start with 1,000
Now add 40.
Add another 1,000.
Add 30.
Add 1,000.
Now 20.
Then 1,000 again.
And finally add 10.
What's the total?

4. Mary's father has five daughters:

1. Chacha
2. Cheche
3. Chichi
4. Chocho
5. ????
Question: What is the name of the fifth daughter?

Answers:
1. If your answer was first place you are wrong. You pass the runner in second place, so YOU are now in second place.
2. If your answer was second from last, you would be wrong. Think a little.... How could you pass the last person? If you are behind the last person, then he could not be the last person.
3. 5,000? You're wrong again! The correct answer is 4,100. Try it with a calculator, you'll see....
4. Chuchu? Wrong! Mary, silly! Try to understand the question first...

Video of Tammy Nyp -- still very popular

After weeks of being on top of search terms, the name Tammy Nyp is still going strong. Why is everyone want to tag and post her video? I believe everyone is just curious of who this girl really is.

The Tammy sex video scandal was a scandal in Singapore involving a sex video first circulated in mid-February 2006 that turned into an Internet phenomenon. The incident began when a cheerleader and student from Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP), known only as Tammy, apparently had her mobile phone stolen by an enemy, and a 10-minute video stored in her phone involving oral sex and intercourse with her boyfriend was uploaded on the Internet.

I made a post about this days ago. Click this link now and see more of her.

Remote sensing to map forest fires

A semiautomatic method to map forest fires during large periods by means of remote sensing imagery has been developed. This methodology has been applied to the period 1975-1993 and results have been given as a forest fire map series and a fire history map of Catalonia (Northeast of Spain).

These maps have been lately converted to vector layers and all results have been integrated into a GIS.

The results have been contrasted to independent administration data and commission and omission errors have been evaluated. Fire frequencies and NDVI post-fire values have been used to retrieve valuable information on the fire regime and to evaluate plant regeneration rates in Mediterranean plant communities. GIS tools are being used for further landscape analysis. Read the article.

"As we mop up the terror cells in Mindanao and usher in peace, as we consolidate open trade in ASEAN and East Asia, as we drive domestic enterprise to the grassroots and rally all Filipinos behind the fight against poverty - we will be well on the way to winning the grand prize of First World status in 20 years," she emphasized.

PGMA's Speech during the First National Convention of the League of Cities of the Philippines (LCP)

President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo's Speech during the First National Convention of the League of Cities of the Philippines (LCP)
Thursday, January 18, 2007
Fiesta Pavilion, Manila Hotel, Manila

Damo gid nga salamat, Mayor Treñas.

Mayor Sarmiento, all the other city mayors, your vice mayors and your councils and your barangay officials. Congratulations! To the first ever National Convention of the League of Cities of the Philippines.

This convention is a long-overdue recognition that our cities and your league have become a force to reckon with in our country's march to a better future. If you remember before I delivered our State of the Nation Address, we went around the country and consulted with you on our super regions which became the focus of our State of the Nation Address.

Our super regions approach to national development is founded on the concept of a strategy that leverages the best out of local leadership and resources, and projects them to a national and regional plane. And I am very happy and I look forward to the day when the league of cities would indeed be able to submit legislation to the national government in order to strengthen the local governments and the cities in the challenges that face your cities.

Your cities are the hubs whose spokes extend along all points of the compass to other cities and hubs of prosperity within the region. With hardworking and dedicated city mayors like you, we will continue to move forward in the global arena of competitiveness and excellence.

We thank you because your economic activities have helped our economy go on this extended bull run that it is enjoying higher than ever OFW remittances, a strong peso, surging stocks, tamed inflation, stable interest rates, and increasing investment inflows.

We have regained our place in the international landscape as a strong player in the fight against terror. This morning before I came here, I was at the Department of National Defense for we had a meeting with the U.S. officials who are supporting us in our Philippine defense reforms. And I took the opportunity to congratulate everyone involved because the highest Abu Sayyaf leader, Abu Sulaiman, has been slain.

I commended the Armed Forces for another milestone in the campaign against terror. This milestone caps with glory the signing of the ASEAN Convention on Counter-terrorism. We are resolved to work with our strategic partners in the region and with the United States to tighten the dragnet and stop the movement of terrorists, their finances and their deadly materiel across the seas and borders.

We mark every high point in the campaign against the Abu Sayyaf and the JI with greater resolve to move forward in strengthening domestic, regional and global security. The Philippines has a stake in a safer world where eight million Filipinos work and reside. We have a stake in an East Asian region that builds on prosperity and stability and peace. The relentless pressure we have applied in the field is taking its toll. We will keep it up until all the terrorists and their clandestine cells are accounted for.

This government is determined to finish the job with a hand of steel against evil. And I call on all the city mayors, let us all be determined to usher in a durable peace through economic development, interfaith dialogue and international cooperation. As I was coming in I saw City Mayor Jun Acharon of General Santos City which was the victim of the latest bomb terroristic activity. And I hope Jun that with the killing of the top Abu Sayyaf leader and with the continued support of the United States, as they have again reiterated to us today, we will be able to put an end not only to the violence in Sulu -- which has really become very peaceful -- but to the violence in the great cities like General Santos City.

We have championed a social agenda that weaves the spirit of one caring and sharing community that's given a tangible share in the 2007 budget. And I thank the city mayors, because you have also put so much of a caring and sharing community in your own city budgets.

Social services is now the biggest component in the national budget, pulling away from debt services for the first time in many years. For the first time in many years our social budget is bigger than our debt service budget. And that is excluding the IRA, and your IRA after all is supposed to be devoted to agriculture, health, social welfare. In other words, the social budget would even be bigger if we were to include the social expenditures of our local government. While you are primarily responsible for social expenditures, the national government stands ready to help those who are already devoting much of the resources to social services.

For example, 700 million has been added to funds for job training scholarships under the TESDA, and part of this is that we are providing at least one scholarship for everyone of your barangays. Please give us your list of beneficiaries. This will broaden the wellspring of Filipino talent and excellence for a well-paid employment. You know we look for well-paid employment. And so TESDA is concentrating its training on those things that give us well-paid employment. For example, call center agents like Iloilo, what is your hiring rate? For every 100 that the call center companies interview in Iloilo, they hire forty. The highest in the country, congratulations! And we want more of your cities -- because your children already have the basic English -- we want more of your cities to study what we call the call center English.

Another very important, very popular livelihood for a living is seafarers. We have a great demand for seafarers all over the world. The Filipino is considered the best seafarers, so we want to train more seafarers. And then sometimes when I go to some of these cities or even the provinces, some of the older men... Well, middle-aged -- not, not, not older, very old -- but the middle-aged say, how can we become a call center agent. We're already way past high school, or we didn't go to high school, we don't speak English well enough, we can't even train for call center English. Well, another huge opportunity available, we have tens of thousands of demand for welders, high-income paying jobs. So, we are also promoting training in that activity.

And finally, you will be surprised, I think Marides, Marikina is one of the sources of demand. We have a very very big demand for butchers. So for those who didn't study high school, isn't it Marides, you have a big demand for butchers in Marikina? But not only in Marikina, in Australia, all over the world, there're thousands, tens of thousands also of job orders for butchers. So, we want to concentrate our training on this high-paying occupations. And we invite you, as I said, to submit the names of your nominees to TESDA so that they can give them the scholarship certificates.

Another very important activity where we want to help our cities is half-priced medicine. The target for half-priced medicine outlets has been doubled to 30,000 nationwide. This is one of our success stories that we have been able to bring half-priced medicine to the people, but we want to bring it even more. Please, also nominate to us the locations in your cities where we need to put an outlet for half-priced medicines.

All of these and more, we shall pursue as we meet head-on the challenges of a new Philippines in the context of highly-invigorated ASEAN and East Asia communities.

And as Jerry said, I am a strong advocate for local autonomy. As always, let me renew my pledge that I will stand as your partner for development, security and good governance. Let's remain focused on the task at hand.

I shall continue to wait upon your leadership to serve the people. The ideas come from you, in the end, the ideas will be implemented by you. And so I salute the cities for your great work and may you continue to achieve greater height in the years to come.

Thank you. More power. Mabuhay!

Postsecondary Teachers

Nature of the Work

Postsecondary teachers instruct students in a wide variety of academic and vocational subjects beyond the high school level that may lead to a degree or to improvement in one’s knowledge or career skills. These teachers include college and university faculty, postsecondary career and technical education teachers, and graduate teaching assistants.

College and university faculty make up the majority of postsecondary teachers. They teach and advise more than 16 million full- and part-time college students and perform a significant part of our Nation’s research. Faculty also keep up with new developments in their field and may consult with government, business, nonprofit, and community organizations.

Faculty usually are organized into departments or divisions, based on academic subject or field. They usually teach several different related courses in their subject—algebra, calculus, and statistics, for example. They may instruct undergraduate or graduate students, or both. College and university faculty may give lectures to several hundred students in large halls, lead small seminars, or supervise students in laboratories. They prepare lectures, exercises, and laboratory experiments; grade exams and papers; and advise and work with students individually. In universities, they also supervise graduate students’ teaching and research. College faculty work with an increasingly varied student population made up of growing shares of part-time, older, and culturally and racially diverse students.

Faculty keep abreast of developments in their field by reading current literature, talking with colleagues, and participating in professional conferences. They may also do their own research to expand knowledge in their field. They may perform experiments; collect and analyze data; and examine original documents, literature, and other source material. From this process, they arrive at conclusions, and publish their findings in scholarly journals, books, and electronic media.

Most college and university faculty extensively use computer technology, including the Internet; e-mail; CD-ROMs, and software programs, such as statistical packages. They may use computers in the classroom as teaching aids and may post course content, class notes, class schedules, and other information on the Internet. The use of e-mail, chat rooms, and other techniques has greatly improved communications between students and teachers and among students

Some faculty use the Internet to teach courses to students at remote sites. These so-called “distance learning” courses are an increasingly popular option for non-traditional students such as working adults. While more convenient for students, faculty who teach these courses must be able to adapt existing courses to make them successful online or design a new course that takes advantage of the format.

Most faculty members serve on academic or administrative committees that deal with the policies of their institution, departmental matters, academic issues, curricula, budgets, equipment purchases, and hiring. Some work with student and community organizations. Department chairpersons are faculty members who usually teach some courses but have heavier administrative responsibilities.

The proportion of time spent on research, teaching, administrative, and other duties varies by individual circumstance and type of institution. Faculty members at universities normally spend a significant part of their time doing research; those in 4-year colleges, somewhat less; and those in 2-year colleges, relatively little. The teaching load, however, often is heavier in 2-year colleges and somewhat lighter at 4-year institutions. Full professors at all types of institutions usually spend a larger portion of their time conducting research than do assistant professors, instructors, and lecturers.

In addition to traditional 2- and 4-year institutions, an increasing number of faculty work in alternative schools or in programs that are aimed at providing career-related education for working adults. Courses are usually offered online or on nights and weekends. Faculty at these programs generally work part time and are only responsible for teaching, with little to no administrative and research responsibilities.

Postsecondary vocational education teachers, also known as postsecondary career and technical education teachers, provide instruction for occupations that require specialized training, but may not require a 4-year degree, such as welder, dental hygienist, x-ray technician, auto mechanic, and cosmetologist. Classes often are taught in an industrial or laboratory setting where students are provided hands-on experience. For example, welding instructors show students various welding techniques and essential safety practices, watch them use tools and equipment, and have them repeat procedures until they meet the specific standards required by the trade. Increasingly, career and technical education teachers are integrating academic and vocational curriculums so that students obtain a variety of skills that can be applied to the “real world.”

Career and technical education teachers have many of the same responsibilities that other college and university faculty have. They must prepare lessons, grade papers, attend faculty meetings, and keep abreast of developments in their field. Career and technical education teachers at community colleges and career and technical schools also often play a key role in students’ transition from school to work by helping to establish internship programs for students and by facilitating contact between students and prospective employers.

Graduate teaching assistants, often referred to as graduate TAs, assist faculty, department chairs, or other professional staff at colleges and universities by performing teaching or teaching-related duties. In addition to their work responsibilities, assistants have their own school commitments, as they are also students who are working towards earning a graduate degree, such as a Ph.D. Some teaching assistants have full responsibility for teaching a course—usually one that is introductory in nature—which can include preparation of lectures and exams, and assigning final grades to students. Others provide assistance to faculty members, which may consist of a variety of tasks such as grading papers, monitoring exams, holding office hours or help-sessions for students, conducting laboratory sessions, or administering quizzes to the class. Teaching assistants generally meet initially with the faculty member whom they are going to assist in order to determine exactly what is expected of them, as each faculty member may have his or her own needs. For example, some faculty members prefer assistants to sit in on classes, while others assign them other tasks to do during class time. Graduate teaching assistants may work one-on-one with a faculty member or, for large classes, they may be one of several assistants.

Earnings

Median annual earnings of all postsecondary teachers in May 2004 were $51,800. The middle 50 percent earned between $36,590 and $72,490. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $25,460, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $99,980.

Earnings for college faculty vary according to rank and type of institution, geographic area, and field. According to a 2004-05 survey by the American Association of University Professors, salaries for full-time faculty averaged $68,505. By rank, the average was $91,548 for professors, $65,113 for associate professors, $54,571 for assistant professors, $39,899 for instructors, and $45,647 for lecturers. Faculty in 4-year institutions earn higher salaries, on average, than do those in 2-year schools. In 2004-05, faculty salaries averaged $79,342 in private independent institutions, $66,851 in public institutions, and $61,103 in religiously affiliated private colleges and universities. In fields with high-paying nonacademic alternatives—medicine, law, engineering, and business, among others—earnings exceed these averages. In others fields—such as the humanities and education—they are lower.

Many faculty members have significant earnings in addition to their base salary, from consulting, teaching additional courses, research, writing for publication, or other employment. In addition, many college and university faculty enjoy some unique benefits, including access to campus facilities, tuition waivers for dependents, housing and travel allowances, and paid sabbatical leaves. Part-time faculty usually have fewer benefits than full-time faculty.

Earnings for postsecondary career and technical education teachers vary widely by subject, academic credentials, experience, and region of the country. Part-time instructors usually receive few benefits.

Shilpa Shetty, target of racial abuse

Shilpa Shetty - a target of racial abuse. You read it right. Racism inside Celebrity Big Brother UK's house. The leader in the center of the abuse scandal is former Big Brother contestant, Jade Goody.

Goody went on by saying to Shetty to “go back to the slums and find out what real life is all about lady... You’re not some princess in f****** Neverland. I don’t give a shit. You’re a normal housemate like everybody else. You need to come to terms with that.” This was followed by former Miss Great Britain, Danielle Lloyd, adding, “I think she should f*ck off home. She can’t even speak English properly.” Goody’s mother Jackie frequently referred to Shetty as “the Indian”.

With this, an insurance company said it was terminating a modeling contract with Danielle Lloyd. The event also has affected the Big Brother show.

Sparkplug of the Day

Sparkplug of the Day: I don't know if Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) spokesperson Gregorio "Ka Roger" Rosal's call is doing any good to the Filipino people. Rosal called on the people to punish the criminal, anti-democratic and antipeople Arroyo regime and deal it telling blows during this period and beyond, in order to ensure that it finally goes down.

The CPP spokesperson said that for the past three years, the Arroyo regime has been sharpening and brutally applying its knives and psywar tactics against the progressive, patriotic and democratic movement and party-list organizations in order to destroy and prevent them from gaining more seats in the parliament.

A Guide for Writing Proposals

Wednesday, January 17, 2007

Here are tips for writing a good proposal. I have tried writing one before and the steps worked. Follow the tips and you'd be on your way to persuading your employer to fund a project or to implement a program that you would like to launch.

Proposals are informative and persuasive writing because they attempt to educate the reader and to convince that reader to do something. The goal of the writer is not only to persuade the reader to do what is being requested, but also to make the reader believe that the solution is practical and appropriate. In persuasive proposal writing, the case is built by the demonstration of logic and reason in the approach taken in the solution.

Facts must lead logically and inevitably to the conclusion and/or the solution presented. Evidence should be given in a descending order of importance, beginning with the most important evidence and ending with the least important.

Any questions that the reader might pose should be anticipated and answered in a way that reflects the stated position of your proposal. It is important that the writer, also, considers all sides of the argument --- providing other alternative solutions to the problem, but showing how the one chosen is superior to the others included. Proceed here for the proper proposal format.

How to give a good talk

Giving a talk is more difficult that it seems. Especially when your talk is about a high-level computing science subject. There are syntactical as well as semantical forms to be observed, and these might differ per environment.

Timing is an issue, and keeping the audience attention is too. Being a computing scientist, it is probable that you will be asked to give a (large) number of talks during your career. As these talks have some points in common, we will focus on those points. Read more.

Tammy Nyp - who is she?

The Tammy sex tape or video scandal was a scandal in Singapore involving a sex video first circulated in mid-February 2006 that turned into an Internet phenomenon that you can even find it in Wikipedia.

This Tammy tape has become one of the popular keywords in Technorati, which goes to show sex scandal tapes are just popular online. If you landed here hoping to see the tape, sorry, I don't have it here. With that being said I found a place that does have the Tammy NYP video. Beware, this is not safe for kids or work. Boto Mo, I-Patrol Mo

This is a good idea from the Philippines largest TV network, ABS-CBN.

Television network ABS-CBN yesterday launched "Boto Mo, I-Patrol Mo," a program promoting "citizen journalism" in which every Filipino can report election-related issues using 3G and multimedia messaging system (MMS) technology.

The "Boto Mo, I-Patrol Mo," an interactive monitoring of election issues, is part of the network’s nationwide "Halalan ’07" coverage of the midterm elections in May.

Concerned citizens can use their MMS-capable or 3G phones to send information to "Boto Mo, I-Patrol Mo" hotline 2366, the ABS-CBN short messaging system (SMS) center.

The program begins airing on Monday during the "TV Patrol" newscast, but ABS-CBN will devote an hour for the program as election day approaches.

ABS-CBN News and Current Affairs head Maria Ressa, news chief Charie Villa and current affairs chief Luchi Cruz-Valdez led the program’s launch yesterday afternoon at the ABS-CBN offices in Quezon City. Link is here.

Talumpati ni ERAP

Tuesday, January 16, 2007

Talumpati ni former President JOSEPH EJERCITO ESTRADA.

(Speech of President JOSEPH EJERCITO ESTRADA on the occasion of the
13th Anniversary Celebration of the EDSA Revolution at the EDSA Shrine,
Quezon City, at 3:30 p.m. of February 22, 1999.)

TAOS-puso akong bumabati sa lahat ng ating mga kababayan sa
makasaysayang okasyong ito, and ika-labintatlong anibersaryo ng
EDSA People Power Revolution.

Col.

At noong
nakaraang Hunyo naman ng taong nakalipas ay mapayapa ring isinalin sa
akin ni Pangulong Ramos ang pagiging Pangulo. Ito ay nagpapatunay ng
katatagan ng ating kaayusang pampulitika.

The Legacy of EDSA

I stand before you today fortunate and proud to have succeeded two worthy
leaders who not only kept the legacy of EDSA alive but also enhanced its
spirit.

Today, Filipinos live in the glory of democracy and by ways of freedom. This
restored democracy and freedom we all owe to that momentous event when
Filipinos from all walks of life came out with one heart, one soul, one voice to
prove that tanks could be powerless against rosaries and guns could be
silenced by prayers.

EDSA was, by and large, a reawakening. It was when people subordinated
personal interests to the national good. It was when Filipinos became truly
Filipinos - deserving of the sacrifices of our heroes and that of man who
believed they were worth dying for.

noong taong 1986.

Standing by the ways of freedom

naging Senador, Bise-Presidente, at ngayon, inyong Pangulo.

There is truth to the saying that when God closes a window, he opens a
bigger door. When the Filipinos went through great sufferings before EDSA,
they were just being prepared for something bigger.

The fight continues

Mga minamahal kong kababayan, di pa tapos ang laban ng EDSA. Hindi
magiging ganap ang ating kalayaan kung ang masang Pilipino ay nabubuhay
pa rin sa kahirapan.

More than one hundred years ago, the masses pinned their hopes for a better
life on the attainment of independence. They fought for what they believed to
be the broader goals of the revolution - a brotherhood among Filipinos, equal
opportunities for the rich and the poor, and the eradication of poverty.

mapayapa at masagana.

Today we are waging new battles against the tyranny of poverty, against graft
and corruption against criminality, against drug abuse and trafficking, against
the degradation of the environment.

Dito natin kailangan ang diwa ng EDSA - ang ating pagkakaisa, at
pagtutulungan. At ako'y handang mamuno sa labang ito. Ang tanging hangad
ko ngayon ay maalaala bilang Pangulong naging kampeon ng mahihirap, at
sisiguraduhin kong mangyari ito sa natitira pang 1,955 araw ng aking
panunungkulan.

The need for unity and solidarity today

magkaisa ngayon? Kung nagsama-sama tayo noon - bata man o matanda,
may-kaya o wala, kristiyano at Muslim, bakit hindi tayo magsama-samang
muli?

Closing

Let us achieve reconcilation based on justice. Let us attain unity and solidarity
so we can move our country forward faster. Isantabi natin ang mga personal
na interes at pamumulitika para sa kapakanan ng nakrarami. This should be
the way of freedom and democracy, this is the only way to go for Filipinos.

Magiging makabuluhan lamang ang ating pagdiriwang na ito kung ang
pagkakaisang pinanindigan ng mga Pilipino sa EDSA noong 1986 ay muli
nating bubuhayin sa kasalukuyang panahon.

To ensure that the legacy of EDSA lives on, I here today issuing an executive
order creating an EDSA People Power Commission to perpetuate and
propagate the spirit of EDSA. Among its functions will be to initiate activities
that will expand awareness of the principles and values that the EDSA people
revolution stands for and plan, organize and implement the yearly
commemoration of the February 22-25, 1986 EDSA revolution.

The commission shall have 25 members, to be chaired by a cabinet member
and cochaired by a private sector, representative. Lifetime honorary
membership to the commission shall be given to former President Corazon C.
Aquino, former President Fidel V. Ramos, and Manila Archbishop Jaime
Cardinal Sin.

Tulad nga po ng aking sinabi sa "Ulat sa Bayan" sa simula ng atong ito: Sa
ating pagkakaisa at pagtutulungan tayo ay sabaysabay na babangon bilang
isang bansa, bilang isang lipunan, bilang isang lahi.

Maraming salamat at mabuhay ang sambayanang Pilipino!

Nobel Prize adds nearly 2 years to your lifespan

New research by the University of Warwick reveals that a Nobel Prize brings more than just cash and kudos - it can also add nearly two years to your life.

The research by Professor Andrew Oswald, an economist at the University of Warwick, and Matthew Rablen, (a former Warwick postgraduate researcher now a government economist), is published this month in a study entitled "Mortality and Immortality".

The researchers carried out their study in order to try to answer a long-standing question for economists and medical researchers as to whether social status alone can affect people's well being and lifespan. Although the existence of some kind of effect is known from studies of monkey packs, in humans it has been difficult up till now to separate any perceived positive effect of "status" from the effect of simple greater wealth that status often brings. Nobel Prize winners were viewed as an ideal group to study as the winners could be seen as having their status suddenly dropped on them. They also come with a ready made control group they can be directly measured against - scientists who were nominated for a Nobel prize but did not actually win one.

The researchers looked at winners and nominees in physics and chemistry between 1901 and 1950 (the full list of nominees are kept secret for 50 years). This gave them 528 male scientists with known biographical details (birth and death dates). They looked at one sex only to avoid differences in life span between sexes. They dropped four from that total who died prematurely for non biological reasons - such as active combat in the First World War. That left 524 scientists, of whom 135 actually won a Nobel Prize.

The average life span for this group was just over 76 years. Winners of the Nobel Prize were found to live 1.4 years longer on average (77.2 years) than those who had "merely" been nominated for a prize (who lived on average for 75.8 years). When the survey was restricted to only comparing winners and nominees from the same country, the longevity gap widened even more by around another two thirds of a year on average.

Professor Oswald said: "Status seems to work a kind of health-giving magic. Once we do the statistical corrections, walking across that platform in Stockholm apparently adds about 2 years to a scientist's life-span. How status does this, we just don't know."

The researchers also looked at the Nobel Prize fund - the real value of which has changed over time. By comparing the possible effects of that variation, they found that the amount of actual prize money won by Nobel prize winners had no effect on their longevity - suggesting that it is the sheer status boost of the award that is important in extending lifespan.

The researchers also looked to see if the number of nominations for a Nobel Prize had any effect as a number of the scientists in the survey had been nominated for the award several times. They found that the number had no effect- actually winning the Nobel Prize was what counted. LINK to post.

The Golden Globe Winners

January 16, 2007 - The Hollywood Foreign Press Assn.'s 64th annual Golden Globes were awarded Monday night, with Paramount Vantage's Babel and DreamWorks/Paramount's Dreamgirls taking the top nods.

Babel, directed by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, won best motion picture drama, while the Bill Condon-helmed Dreamgirls won best film musical or comedy.

As expected, Helen Mirren won best actress (drama) for The Queen. Meryl Streep won best actress (musical or comedy) for The Devil Wears Prada.

Forest Whitaker won best actor (drama) for The Last King of Scotland, while Sacha Baron Cohen won best actor (musical or comedy) for Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan.

Cohen, appearing publicly as himself after a year of only doing press in character, gave what is largely considered the most memorable acceptance speech of the night, where he thanked "the anus and testicles of my co-star, Ken Davitian."

Eddie Murphy beat out the likes of Jack Nicholson to win the best supporting actor for his role in Dreamgirls, while his co-star Jennifer Hudson won best supporting actress.

In a sign that his long-coveted Oscar may finally be at hand, Martin Scorsese won best director for The Departed. Peter Morgan won best screenplay for The Queen.

The award for best foreign film went to the American team of producers Clint Eastwood and Steven Spielberg for Letters From Iwo Jima. Cars won best animated film.

The nod for original score went to Alexandre Desplat for The Painted Veil, while Prince won original song for his tune "The Song of the Heart" from Happy Feet. LINK

How to determine if you are an engineer

The only jokes you receive are through email (OUCH)

At Christmas, it goes without saying that you will be the one to find the burnt-out bulb in the string of Christmas lights.

Buying flowers for your girlfriend/boyfriend or spending the money to upgrade your RAM is a moral dilemma

If you find that you have to often explain how to use the gifts you have given other people.

Everyone else on the Alaskan Cruise is on deck peering at the scenery, and you are still on a personal tour of the engine room

In college, you thought Spring Break was metal fatigue failure

The Salespeople at Circuit City can't answer any of your questions

You are always late to meetings

You are at an air show and know how fast the skydivers are falling

You are next in line on death row in a French Prison and you find that the guillotine is not working properly, so you offer to fix it.

You bought your wife/husband a new CD ROM drive for her birthday

You forget to get a haircut (for 6 months!)

You can quote scenes from any Monty Python movie

You can type 70 words per minute but can't read your own handwriting

You can't write unless the paper has both horizontal and vertical lines

You comment to your wife/husband that her straight hair is nice and parallel

You go on the rides at Disneyland and sit backwards in the chairs to see how they do the special effects

You have Dilbert comics/paphanelia displayed anywhere in your work area

You have ever saved the power cord from a broken appliance

You have more friends on the internet than in real life

You have backed up your hard drive

You have never bought any new underwear or socks for yourself since you got married.

You have used coat hangars and duct tape for something other than hanging coats and taping ducts

You know what http:// stands for

You look forward to Christmas only to put together the kids' toys

You own one or more white short-sleeve dress shirts

You see a good design and still have to change it

You spent more on your calculator than you did on your wedding ring

You still own a slide rule and you know how to use it

You think a pocket protector is a fashion accessory

You think that when people around you yawn, it's because they didn't get enough sleep

You wear black socks with white tennis shoes (or vice versa)

You window shop at Radio Shack

You're in the backseat of your car, she/he is looking wistfully at the moon, and you're trying to locate a geosynchronous satellite

Your checkbook always balances

Your laptop computer costs more than your car

Your wife/husband hasn't the foggiest idea of what you do at work

Your wrist watch has more computing power than a 300 MHz pentium

You've already calculated how much you make per second

You've ever tried to repair a $5 radio

Your four basic food groups are: 1. Caffeine 2. Fat 3. Sugar 4.Chocolate

Philippine Teacher shortage over?

The proposed P1.126-trillion Philippine budget this year contains a special provision that would ensure the hiring of competent teachers and remedy the worsening shortage of public mentors, Sen. Franklin Drilon said yesterday.

“Under this budget, over 16,390 teachers will be hired. By the end of 2007, we can say that there will be no more teacher deficiency,” he said.

“An additional budget of P873 million will be allocated for the creation of additional teaching positions that will effectively wipe out the shortage of public school teachers in the country. The total allocation for new teachers now stands at nearly P2 billion,” Drilon told reporters. Read more.

Top Censored News Stories of 2006

Project Censored specializes in covering the top news stories which were either ignored or downplayed by the mainstream media each year. Project Censored is a research team composed of more than 200 university faculty, students, and community experts who review about 1,000 news story submissions for coverage, content, reliability of sources, and national significance. The top 25 stories selected are submitted to a distinguished panel of judges who then rank them in order of importance.

1. Future of Internet Debate Ignored by Media

The Supreme Court ruled that giant cable companies aren't required to share their wires with other Internet service providers. The issue was misleadingly framed as an argument over regulation, when it's really a case of the Federal Communications Commission and Congress talking about giving cable and telephone companies the freedom to control supply and content - a decision that could have them playing favorites and forcing consumers to pay to get information and services that currently are free.

2. Halliburton Charged With Selling Nuclear Technology to Iran

Halliburton, the notorious U.S. energy company, sold key nuclear-reactor components to a private Iranian oil company called Oriental Oil Kish as recently as 2005, using offshore subsidiaries to circumvent U.S. sanctions. The story is particularly important because Vice President Dick Cheney, who now claims to want to stop Iran from getting nukes, was president of Halliburton in the mid-1990s, at which time he may have advocated business dealings with Iran, in violation of U.S. law.

3. World Oceans in Extreme Danger

Governments deny global warming is happening as they rush to map the ocean floor in the hopes of claiming rights to oil, gas, gold, diamonds, copper, zinc and the planet's last pristine fishing grounds. Researchers at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in 2005 found "the first clear evidence that the world ocean is growing warmer," including the discovery "that the top half-mile of the ocean has warmed dramatically in the past 40 years as the result of human-induced greenhouse gases."

4. Hunger and Homelessness Increasing in the United States

As hunger and homelessness rise in the United States, the Bush administration plans to get rid of a data source that supports this embarrassing reality, a survey that's been used to improve state and federal programs for retired and low-income Americans. In 2003, the Bush Administration tried to whack the Bureau of Labor Statistics report on mass layoffs and in 2004 and 2005 attempted to drop the bureau's questions on the hiring and firing of women from its employment data.

5. High-tech Genocide in Congo

If you believe the corporate media, then the ongoing genocide in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is all just a case of ugly tribal warfare. But that is a superficial, simplistic explanation that fails to connect this terrible suffering with the immense fortunes that stand to be made from manufacturing cell phones, laptop computers and other high-tech equipment. What's really at stake in this bloodbath is control of natural resources such as diamonds, tin, and copper, as well as cobalt - which is essential for the nuclear, chemical, aerospace, and defense industries - and coltan and niobium, which is most important for the high-tech industries.

6. Federal Whistleblower Protection in Jeopardy

Though record numbers of federal workers have been sounding the alarm on waste, fraud, and other financial abuse since George W. Bush became president, the agency charged with defending government whistleblowers has reportedly been throwing out hundreds of cases - and advancing almost none. Statistics released at the end of 2005 by Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility led to claims that special counsel Scott Bloch, who was appointed by Bush in 2004, is overseeing the systematic elimination of whistleblower rights.
