How to get comments from blog readers
Wednesday, March 26, 2008
Getting comments from your blog posts is very encouraging and fulfilling as a blogger. Comments affirm that people or your readers/visitors love what you posted. The comment section of your blog serves as a forum for open discussion.
If the number of comments you receive is a gauge for a blog’s popularity, don’t we all want to know how to increase the comments on our blogs?
For two years of blogging, I already have a handful of learning on how to get comments. Here are a few I’d love to share.
1. Write a social controversy. When the Philippine education sector scrapped the idea of introducing “sex education” into the curriculum, I thought of getting to the fun and wrote a post. Readers love it.
2. Take notice of academic updates. Since this blog is about education and research updates, I was one of those who monitored the fate of the planet Pluto. When the International Astronomical Union voted to kill Pluto as a planet and changed its status to a mere dwarf planet, my post Pluto is Out: Here Comes the New Solar System, attracted teenagers and people from academe.
3. Enjoy the virus spree. Be one of the firsts to post about a computer virus spreading havoc to everyone’s online security.
4. Say that Manny Pacquaio looks like a monkey. Did you remember the post that created a huge stir among Pacman fanatics? No, it wasn’t from this blog. Or be like Brian Boy who's not afraid to say anything, even if it involves Jesus Christ!
5. Be like master Yuga. No matter what he says, big or small, readers seemed to be obligated to comment. It pays to be the king of the Philippine bloggers.
6. Help others make money. Suggest some monetizing techniques and tips to increasing traffic and CPM. How to increase Google Adsense earnings?
7. Neutrality is the key. Make sure you approve positive and negative comments. Not everyone will agree to your viewpoints and you have to respect that. Answer their comments if necessary.
8. Leave an ending question like “Do you agree with it?” You always get this tip from pro-bloggers. Ask people about what they think. This will rouse readers’ enthusiasm to comment.
Do you have other tips? Just leave your comments.

i agree especially with the last tip, on asking questions. i find that it's easier to comment on posts when there's a question at the end. sometimes, when there's no question, even if i want to comment, i don't know what to write.
