Microsoft mogul Bill Gates has fallen from the top spot as the richest American on the Forbes 400 list, which had been number 1 for 15 consecutive years. Warren Buffett takes the lead as America's wealthiest.
Buffett, Berkshire Hathaway Inc chairman added $8 billion to his net worth in a 33-day period, August 29 to October 1, 2008 to reach $58 billion.
Bill Gates' net worth declined $1.5 billion to $55.5 billion.
Forbes 400 recalculated list is to be published later this month.
