Complete List: UNESCO World Heritage Sites

Sunday, November 16, 2008

I was reading a few info about Saint Sophia Cathedral in Ukraine and learned that the site is one of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Europe. I wondered how many sites (could be forest, mountain, lake, desert, monument, building, complex, or city) are there in the UNESCO World Heritage list. Google says there are 878 sites of outstanding universal value: 678 cultural, 174 natural, and 26 mixed properties, in 145 states, from the latest count in 2008.

Why should a site be part of UNESCO World Heritage?
The international World Heritage Programme catalogues names, and conserves sites of outstanding cultural or natural importance to the common heritage of humanity. Once the site is listed, it can obtain funds from the World Heritage Fund.

Which sites are part of UNESCO World Heritage Programme?
