Stampede for boxes at WalMart. I knew it. That is the reason why I hate shopping on Black Friday because the possibility of a stampede is really high. Now it happens at Walmart Long Island store. A stampede killed a 34-year-old man.

A 34-year-old man, believed to be a store employee/worker, was trampled to death in a rush of Black Friday shoppers at a Long Island mall today, according to nypost.com. Four other people were hospitalized, including a 28-year-old pregnant woman. From Daily News "Walmart worker died, woman miscarried from Stampede":
Long lines of shoppers thronged outside the Wal-Mart at the Green Acres mall in Valley Stream before it opened for post-Thanksgiving business at 5 a.m.
A worker died after being trampled and a woman miscarried when hundreds of shoppers smashed through the doors of a Long Island Wal-Mart Friday morning, witnesses said.Who's to blame for the stampede? Who else but Walmart! This kind of situation should have been foreseen by Walmart since it wasn't the first Black Friday anyway. They have been doing this early morning sale for years. They could have known already the possibility of a stampede and put some measures to prevent it. So is this what it means when Walmart says "The safety and security of our customers and associates is our top priority?"
The unidentified worker, employed as an overnight stock clerk, tried to hold back the unruly crowds just after the Valley Stream store opened at 5 a.m.
Witnesses said the surging throngs of shoppers knocked the man down. He fell and was stepped on. As he gasped for air, shoppers ran over and around him.

Yep! Let's blame the establishment instead of the insane shoppers who burst through the doors the moment they were opened! Let's blame the establishment rather than the insane shoppers who cared more about Xboxes than the life of a fellow man! Let's blame the establishment instead of the insane shoppers who, when the problem became apparent, didn't do so much as call the police, but instead went right on with their shopping! Let's blame the establishment, rather than the individuals! Let's blame the establishment, rather than making those involved take personal responsibility for their childish, and frankly barbaric actions!

How long until she sues Walmart?

There are individuals involved in every establishment. The individuals here were the people who did not provide enough security when thousands of customers showed up. It is the responsibility of the individuals within ANY establishment to see about the safety of the public, regardless of how bar "barbaric" they are.

It's easy to blame the people who were influenced by mass psychosis - you may say they are stupid flock of sheep. But to say the truth, I think almost everybody would act like that in SOME situations. Ok, not for TV sets or X boxes, but what if there were extremely cheap cars? Houses? Gold bullions? Sooner o later, with the right incentive everybody would turn to "animal" you, me, everybody...
Hope cases like this will force at least some people to think about it...
Take care

Anonymous: I think it is outrages to always blame the establishement instead of customers. Customers walk on water. I suppose here the customers will still be right. Give me a break! What is the matter with people? The covetousness and greed of these customers was WRONG. They need to prosecute these customers and then stores need to do away with this BLACK FRIDAY garbage. It's time to start thinking of employees rights and quit all this b.s. with the customer rights all the time. It brings out the worst in people and feeds that selfish, greedy covetous spirit. Sorry buddy. 29 November,2008

Should've opened just one door. That would've forced them to come in slowly and in order.

Blaming Walmart is not only right choice. The shoppers who continued to shop around this dying man are surely to blame - and should shoulder a big portion of the blame, especially those shoppers who pushed back more Walmart employees when those employees were trying to aid the injured man, and those shoppers who also pushed back THE POLICE when they arrived to help! Giving those irresponsible shoppers a "free pass" just because Black Friday is always crazy.

Have we truly become a society of blameless, mindless idiots?

Both WalMart and the stampeding shoppers are to blame for this tragedy. The corporation has had prior stampedes during special sales and should have had additional security and crowd control procedures. WalMart is culpable for what occured on their property as they created a situation they knew to be dangerous.
In addition people in the crowd are to blame for their greed above all else. They put the "dollar" above a human life. Despite crowd mentality, we are each individually responsible for our behavior and the consequences of that behavior.
WalMart should be required to provide law enforcement with the available names (via checks, credit cards, etc.) of all customers who made purchases during the time of this tragedy. Everyone should be interviewed, not only to assign blame but also to consider how this can be prevented in the future.

Every one would act like this given the right situation? The problem today is that we have put things ahead of people and more importantly God. These people got swallowed in their own gluttony and greed. Another person wrote that WE need to do away with black Friday. I have. I make it a point not to shop on that day or that week. I try not to shop on Sundays. To me Christmas is not a time to be thinking about material things and Sundays are days of rest and reflection.
