New Tallest Building in the World -- Shanghai, China

The Shanghai Center or Shanghai Tower, in Lujiazui financial district, will soon hold the title as the tallest building in the world. Just yesterday, the groundbreaking ceremony was held for the 632-meter (2,074-foot-tall) twisting cylindrical structure that will dwaft the Taipei 101 building (considered today as the tallest at 509 meters from base to top of spire). Construction is expected to be completed in 2014.

Shanghai Tower will be shaped like a soft triangle, have a skin of two walls of glass and steel, and will generate some of its energy from wind turbines. The building will have office space, residences, a hotel, retail space and restaurants.The 128-story Shanghai Tower will be a double-skinned building that torques and tapers as it rises. Its upper floors reportedly will contain the world’s highest unenclosed observation deck.
Construction is expected to be completed in 2014.
