Interactive Web sites shape public perception

The interactive look and feel of a corporate website could help shape positive perceptions about the organization if the site includes a likeable design and features that engage the target audience, especially job seekers, according to media researchers.

S. Shyam Sundar, professor of film, video and media studies at Penn State, and Jamie Guillory, formerly an undergraduate student at Penn State, are trying to understand how interactivity in websites influences the public perception of an organization. In previous studies of websites of political candidates, Sundar had found that the candidates were rated more positively if their site had some interactive features, even though the sites had no new content, and the candidates held the same policy positions. But too much interactivity tends to turn off people.

Whatever effects, positive or negative, on a site, interactivity acts as a volume knob that boosts the effect. The findings may have important implications for organizations. For instance, by simply tweaking the features on the website and without changing any of the content, a company could project a positive image to its targeted demographic.

In other words, the website of an organization could feature an optimal amount of interactivity specifically tailored to its target audience, and thereby control the impressions that people form of that organization.

Download Free Registry Cleaner

Saturday, May 24, 2008

Download Eusing, free registry cleaner! This software was just released in March this year. It can operate in Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows 9.x, Windows Me, Windows XP, Windows Vista.
Clean up your Registry to keep your PC in tip-top shape.

The more software and hardware you install and uninstall, the more full your Registry gets. A great deal of software doesn't clean up after itself, and leaves behind old and obsolete Registry entries, or upon install creates invalid ones. There will be pointers to missing DLLs, listings of no-longer-valid file extensions, invalid paths, invalid ActiveX Controls, and much more. The more your Registry fills with this junk, the slower your PC gets and the more often you'll have system crashes.

Eusing Free Registry Cleaner helps to fix the problem in a simple, two-step process. Tell it to scan your Registry, and it goes through and identifies common problems and junk.

Then tell it to repair the Registry, and it tidies things up. Because changing the Registry can have serious impact on your system, the program lets you first look at the problems it finds, and tell it to only fix some of them. If you get into trouble, the program also lets you revert to the previous version of the Registry.

File Size: 909KB. Download here.

Philippine Fruit Bat: One of the top 10 new species -- scientists announced!

Today, scientists from the International Institute for Species Exploration (IISE) at Arizona State University, announced the top 10 new species for 2007. The scientists are responsible for species exploration and classification.
Each year the IISE announces a list of the Top 10 New Species for the preceding calendar year. The Top 10 new species described in 2007, announced on May 23, 2008 are shown below. Hurray to the Philippine Fruit Bat for landing at no. 6!

See the top 10 new species after the jump.
1. A Sleeper Ray with a Name that Sucks
Name: Electrolux addisoni
How it made the Top 10: This new genus and species is the largest known member of the electric ray family Narkidae, and made the Top 10 because of its unusual and amusing generic name. According to the authors: “The name alludes to the well-developed electrogenic properties of this ray (collectors and photographers have experienced the shocking personality of this bold, active and brightly patterned electric ray first-hand), the discovery of which sheds light (Latin, lux) on the rich and poorly known fish diversity of the Western Indian Ocean. And the vigorous sucking action displayed on the videotape of the feeding ray that was taken by Stephania and Peter Lamberti may rival a well-known electrical device used to suck the detritus from carpets, furniture, and other dust-gathering surfaces in modern homes.”

Type material: Holotype, South African Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity, Grahamstown; paratype, South African Museum, Cape Town.

2. 75-Million Year Old Giant Duck-billed Dinosaur
Name: Gryposaurus monumentensis
How it made the Top 10: This new dinosaur species was discovered by a team from Alf Museum, the only nationally-accredited paleontology museum on a high school campus. It is one of the most robust duck-billed dinosaurs ever found, and probably the largest dinosaur in the 75 million-year-old Kaiparowits Formation fossil ecosystem.

Type material: Holotype, Raymond M. Alf Museum of Paleontology, Claremont, California.

3. Shocking Pink Millipede
Name: Desmoxytes purpurosea
How it made the Top 10: Millipedes (relatives of centipedes) are highly variable in appearance and coloration, but this shocking pink stands apart. The authors suggest that its gaudy coloration and habits (it sits openly on the ground and vegetation during the day) probably indicates to would-be predators that it is not edible (spiny and toxic).

Type material: Holotype, Museum of Zoology, Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok; paratypes, Chulalongkorn University and Natural History Museum of Denmark, University of Copenhagen.

4. Rare Frog Off the Shelf
Name: Philautus maia
How it made the Top 10: This species was described from a single female museum specimen collected around 1860. It and a number of related species from Sri Lanka are almost certainly now extinct. Its discovery demonstrates the importance of museum specimens in determining baseline information on biodiversity and in documenting the natural heritage of nations. Had this specimen not been collected in the 19th century, it would possibly have never been known.

Type material: Holotype, Natural History Museum, London.

5. One of the Most Venomous Snakes in the World
Name: Oxyuranus temporalis
How it made the Top 10: This is perhaps one of the most venomous known snake species. Its two closest relatives, the inland taipan (or fierce snake) and the coastal taipan, are ranked first and third most venomous snakes in the world, respectively. The discovery of the new species (known only from a single specimen) highlights how little is known of even relatively large animals in harsh, poorly collected habitats (in this case an isolated arid region of Australia). It also emphasizes the need for accurate taxonomy of venomous species for proper treatment of bites.

Type material: Holotype, Western Australia Museum, Perth.

6. Fruit Bat Crosses the Line
Name: Styloctenium mindorensis
How it made the Top 10: This large and charismatic fruit bat species is known only from the Philippine island of Mindoro. It is only the second known species in the genus; the other species is known only from the Indonesian island of Sulawesi and nearby Togian Islands, and was originally discovered (and named after) Alfred Russell Wallace. Wallace was a colleague of Charles Darwin and coauthor of their famous paper On the Tendency of Species to form Varieties; and on the Perpetuation of Varieties and Species by Natural Means of Selection. Among other important contributions, he noted the distinctive faunal break separating Asian and Australian biotas, which is now known as Wallace’s Line. Ironically, the new species occurs on the west side of Wallace’s Line whereas its sister species is on the east side. The new species is threatened by habitat loss and hunting. Its discovery highlights an increasing understanding of endemism on Mindoro, and the need for species exploration and conservation.

Type material: Currently deposited in the University of Kansas Natural History Museum and Biodiversity Research Center, Lawrence, to be transferred to the National Museum of the Philippines, Manila.

7. New Fun Guy on Campus?
Name: Xerocomus silwoodensis
How it made the Top 10: This new mushroom species was discovered on Silwood Campus, a campus of Imperial College, London, although it is also found elsewhere (two additional sites in England and one each in Spain and Italy). The discovery of a new species in one of the most intensely studied floras in the world and on the campus of a leading education center for biologists illustrates how poorly species are known.

Type material: Holotype, Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.

8. Jellyfish Named After Its Victim
Name: Malo kingi
How it made the Top 10: The new species is the second known species of the dangerous box jellyfish genus Malo, one of several genera of irukandji jellyfish. It is named after American tourist Robert King, who apparently died after being stung by the species while swimming off northern Queensland, Australia. King’s death was a pivotal point in irukandji management, raising public awareness about safety.

Type material: Holotype, Queensland Museum, Brisbane.

9. Life Imitates Art: “Dim” Rhinoceros beetle
Name: Megaceras briansaltini
How it made the Top 10: Rhinoceros beetles are named for the horn-like structures on their heads. According to the author, this charismatic new species has a unique form of horn that is otherwise similar only to the one on Dim, the blue rhinoceros beetle in the Disney/Pixar animated film A Bug's Life. This makes for a rare instance of Nature imitating art.

Type material: Holotype, University of Nebraska State Museum, Lincoln.

10. Michelin Man Plant
Name: Tecticornia bibenda
How it made the Top 10: This new species made the Top 10 because of its charismatic appearance; according to press releases, it looks like the Michelin Man™. It has been also the subject of media releases on the lack of support for taxonomic work in Western Australia, a biodiversity hotspot. There is a huge backlog of new plant species awaiting description, ironically generated by environmental impact surveys for mining companies. It is one of 298 new plant species described from Western Australia in 2007.

Type material: Holotype, Western Australian Herbarium, Perth.

Computer antifraud strategy for business

Writing in the International Journal of Business Information Systems from Inderscience Publishers, Shalini Kesar, a computer scientist at Southern Utah University in Cedar City, has devised an antifraud strategy for business.

He suggests that managers should be made aware of security issues and send out cues to junior staff that they have this knowledge.

Combating digital fraud within any organizations is a growing problem for management. Researchers in this field and security practitioners have recently begun to emphasize the need to take into account the "social" aspects of information security. They also emphasize that a lack of communication at the wider organizational level is often associated with computer fraud.

Kesar points out that reported cases of computer fraud only represent a tip of a potentially large iceberg. Anecdotal evidence suggests that employees pose one of the greatest threats because they are in a better position than "outsiders" to engage in computer fraud, Kesar adds.

Opportunistic computer fraud could be minimized, however, he says simply by raising managers' awareness and knowledge of how organizational structure can affect the effectiveness of security measures. Kesar uses the case of a well-known serious fraud that took place at an international bank together with the business theory of management theorist Henry Mintzberg to demonstrate how security breaches might be avoided by educating management.

Watch the robot "Flame" walks like a human

Friday, May 23, 2008

Flame is the name of the highly-advanced walking robot developed by a researcher Daan Hobbelen of TU Delft, The Netherlands.

Flame contains seven motors, an organ of balance and various algorithms which ensure its high level of stability.

For instance, the robot can apply the information provided by its organ of balance to place its feet slightly further apart in order to prevent a potential fall. According to Hobbelen, Flame is the most advanced walking robot in the world, at least in the category of robots which apply the human method of walking as a starting principle. [video after the jump]

Modelling the walking process allows researchers to construct two-legged robots which walk more naturally. More insight into the walking process can in turn help people with walking difficulties, for example through improved diagnoses, training and rehabilitation equipment. TU Delft is working on this together with motion scientists at VU University Amsterdam.

Hobbelen cites ankles as an example. These joints are a type of spring which can be used to define the best level of elasticity. Research conducted by Hobbelen into Flame’s ankles has provided motion scientists with more insight into this topic.

Free text messaging in the Philippines?

Do you think the Philippines, being the texting capital of the world and sends hundreds of millions of text messages a day, can also become a free texting capital of the world?

Free SMS sending or free messaging is proposed by Transportation and Communications Secretary Leandro Mendoza before the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC). He said that telecommunications companies should not charge users for text messaging service since this is supposed to be free under their public franchises.

So what do you think? I think this is good for the nation since text messaging has been the main form of communication among poor families. Saving a few pesos for "text load" will be a big deal already. Carriers should only charge for voice calls and not for SMS.

Yes, this move will be controversial and would be strongly opposed, but I am for this. Let us support free text messaging!

Lifelong premature ejaculation - a study

The multi-disciplinary team was made up of urologists, psychologists, psychiatrists, a sexual health physician, a primary care physician, a neuro-urology researcher, a clinical pharmacologist, an endocrinologist and a radiation oncologist from ten countries have teamed up to develop the first ever evidence-based definition of lifelong premature ejaculation (PE) in the hope that it will aid future diagnosis, treatment and research.

The results of their in-depth study, conducted by the Standards Committee of the International Society for Sexual Medicine, have just been published online by two leading Wiley-Blackwell publications, the urology journal BJU International and The Journal of Sexual Medicine.

They developed their definition after lengthy critical evaluation of the evidence presented in more than 100 studies on premature ejaculation published over the last 65 years. It was unanimously agreed by the experts that the definition of lifelong PE should be a combination of three key factors:

-- “Ejaculation which always or nearly always occurs prior to or within about one minute of vaginal penetration.”
-- “The inability to delay ejaculation on all or nearly all vaginal penetrations.”
-- “Negative personal consequences such as distress, bother, frustration and/or the avoidance of sexual intimacy.”

However, the team have concluded that at the moment there is insufficient evidence to develop an evidence-based definition of acquired PE, which develops at a stage in a man’s life rather than being a life-long problem.

They have also stressed that more research is needed into the PE issues faced by homosexual men as there is also insufficient evidence to develop a definition for this patient group.

The 21 experts came from the USA, UK, Singapore, Argentina, France, Egypt, Denmark, The Netherlands, Australia and Germany.

What probiotics can do to your body or health?

Wednesday, May 21, 2008

Have you been drinking Yakult? What about other probiotic supplements including lactobacillus acidophilus, bifidobacterium, and others? Do you know what benefits your body could get from probiotics?

Probiotic bacteria, defined as living microorganisms that have beneficial effects on human health, have mostly been studied in the prevention and treatment of different gastrointestinal diseases and allergies. Probiotic products, however, are usually consumed by the general, healthy population but not much is known what kind of effects they have on the immune system in healthy adults. It is not clear how probiotics exert their health effects, but one of the most probable action mechanisms is the modulation of immune responses via the gut's mucosal immune system.

The study, performed by the groups of Dr Korpela, Professor Vapaatalo and Professor Julkunen, will be published on April 7, 2008, in the World Journal of Gastroenterology.

This study investigated the immunomodulatory effects of probiotics bacteria in healthy adults. It was found that probiotics have an anti-inflammatory potential seen as a decrease in serum CRP levels and as a reduction in bacteria-induced production of proinflammatory cytokines in peripheral blood mononuclear cells.

Understanding of the specific immunomodulatory effects of probiotics may help in designing future probiotics for targeted purposes. As the effects in the present study were investigated in healthy adults, the real impact of probiotics on inflammatory variables warrants further evaluation during inflammatory processes and in individuals suffering from various types of inflammatory or autoimmune diseases.
