African farmers develop new type of rice

Friday, July 10, 2009

This article was written by the editorial staff of Resource, the weekly newspaper for Wageningen University and Research Center (my former University in the Netherlands). The article is titled "African farmers develop new type of rice."

Rice farmers in West Africa have developed a new type of rice in the last few years, Wageningen researchers have found out. This has come about through spontaneous cross-breeding in the field between African and Asian rice cultivars.

Farmers in West Africa have two sorts of rice at their disposal: Asian rice with high potential yields and African rice, which is better adapted to local conditions. Rice is self-pollinating, which means there is no cross-pollination as a rule. Yet there is still a 0.5% chance of cross-pollination occurring, says Dr. Edwin Nuijten from the Chair Group Technology and agrarian development (TAO), who is involved in the research. After enough generations, this cross-breeding leads to new plants. Farmers have kept aside seed from these new plants, sown them again and exchanged the seeds. Like this, varieties of this new rice type have quietly spread through the region.

The Wageningen researchers used molecular techniques to show that the new hybrid was genetically different to African and Asian rice. The new type of rice gives fairly stable yields and has a short growing season, making it suitable for the short rainy season in Gambia and Senegal, says Nuijten. The hybrid is also well-adapted to the poor West African soils.

Nuijten and his colleagues found closely related varieties of this hybrid in Sierra Leone, Gambia, Guinee Bissau, Guinee Conakry and Senegal. He guesses that the hybrid has emerged spontaneously in several countries, leading to a group of hybrids with the same genetic basis. The researchers are still puzzling over a rice variety developed by farmers in Ghana and Togo, which differs not only from known Asian and African rice varieties, but also from the hybrids in the neighbouring countries. They have not yet managed to trace the starting material for this variety.

As well as TAO, the Plant Physiology chair group and the Netherlands Centre for Genetic Resources (CGN) are also involved in the research, financed by the NWO programme WOTRO, which supports scientific research on development issues. Policymakers and donors should pay more attention to knowledge development and exchange, according to the researchers, who talk of unsupervised learning. This is in contrast to supervised learning, in which plant breeders and scientists tell farmers what to do. ‘It is important to link research with farmers’ knowledge’, says Nuijten, ‘in order to get a better idea of what farmers need. For instance, we are now finding out from the farmers concerned whether we can improve these new rice varieties in any way, or whether we can help with the process of exchange.’

Couple with 16 kids killed in home robbery

Byrd and Melanie Billings were kind-hearted souls who adopted 12 children, some of whom have special needs, in addition to their 4 kids.

Unfortunately, last Thursday night, the couple with 16 kids were shot and killed during a home invasion/robbery. Eight of the children were home when the couple was shot.

The house security surveillance system showed a red, full size van and three white males. Investigators will be releasing more photos and the surveillance video later.

The couple lived on Mobile Highway in the Beulah Community, 17 miles northwest of Pensacola, and near the Alabama-Florida borders.

What will happen to these adopted kids? This is just a sad situation.

Nikola Tesla: Death Ray

Today is the birthday of Nikola Tesla. He was an American inventor, a mechanical and electrical engineer. During his time, he worked on electromagnetism, electromechanical engineering, robotics, remote control, radar and computer science, and to the expansion of ballistics, nuclear physics, and theoretical physics. He was also known for his "Death Ray."

Later in life, Nikola Tesla made remarkable claims concerning a "teleforce" weapon, also called "peace ray" or death ray. In total, the components and methods included:

* An apparatus for producing manifestations of energy in free air instead of in a high vacuum as in the past. This, according to Tesla in 1934, was accomplished.
* A mechanism for generating tremendous electrical force. This, according to Tesla, was also accomplished.
* A means of intensifying and amplifying the force developed by the second mechanism.
* A new method for producing a tremendous electrical repelling force. This would be the projector, or gun, of the invention.

Nikola Tesla died on 7 January 1943.

Elizabeth Williams sued Binghamton University

Elizabeth Williams filed a law suit against Binghamton University. Elizabeth Williams alleged that the New York school used her as a "plaything". According to a fundraiser of New York university, senior athletic department officials tried to use Elizabeth Williams as a sexual "plaything" to get big donors.

The sexual harassment suit was filed Thursday in Manhattan Federal Court by the same law firm that scored an $11.5 million settlement representing ex-Knicks exec Anucha Browne Sanders.
[>via] Williams says that in January, during a game at the Binghamton sports arena, Assistant Athletic Director Chris Lewis introduced her to a corporate donor who was partial to "big-chested, loud-mouthed women." Later, Williams said, she expressed her shock to her boss, Jason Siegel, when two 4-year-old twin boys lifted her skirt while she was visiting their family in an arena box. "Siegel told Williams that that was part of taking one for the team," the lawsuit says.

Siegel, a senior associate athletic director, looked down her shirt and started at her breasts, the lawsuit says.

Williams says the indecent proposal from an alum came during a Jan. 12, 2009, dinner as Siegel watched.

The alumnus started laying hundred-dollar bills on the table and told her to stop him when he had put down enough for her to sleep with him, the suit says.

No photo of Elizabeth Williams released yet.

Mayara Tavares: Obama was checking out a girl

Thursday, July 09, 2009

LOL. Alright, this is Mayara Tavares. Who is Mayara Tavares? She is the girl who represented Brazil at the Junior 8, a group of 54 young people from the G8 countries. Guess what, there are photos online that people find controversial: Pres. Obama is checking out Mayara Tavares! Oh well, leave a comment of whatever you think about the pictures.

From the J8 (Junior 8) summit website:
"Mayara Tavares is 16 and lives in the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She inherited from her grandmother and father a passion to take part in community action and social movements and has been an activist in her community fighting for children and adolescent rights. She has recently acted as a community researcher interviewing other adolescents in the community about their lives and how it feels for them to be growing up in the shantytowns of Rio de Janeiro. Through this work she became part of a National Platform for the improvement of poor communities situated in large urban centers, an initiative carried out by UNICEF in Brazil. She also became a member of the Youth Forum in her municipality and hopes that she can continue to engage her peers in this work."

NOAA Confirms El Nino in 2009

El Nino in Fall 2009 in the US? Sounds to me, it's weird. Never heard of El Nino phenomenon in the United States before. However, I have heard of it many times when I was still in the Philippines.

NOAA scientists today announced the arrival of El Niño, a climate phenomenon with a significant influence on global weather, ocean conditions and marine fisheries. El Niño, the periodic warming of central and eastern tropical Pacific waters, occurs on average every two to five years and typically lasts about 12 months.

NOAA expects this El Niño to continue developing during the next several months, with further strengthening possible. The event is expected to last through winter 2009-10.

El Niño's impacts depend on a variety of factors, such as intensity and extent of ocean warming, and the time of year. Contrary to popular belief, not all effects are negative. On the positive side, El Niño can help to suppress Atlantic hurricane activity. In the United States, it typically brings beneficial winter precipitation to the arid Southwest, less wintry weather across the North, and a reduced risk of Florida wildfires.

El Niño’s negative impacts have included damaging winter storms in California and increased storminess across the southern United States. Some past El Niños have also produced severe flooding and mudslides in Central and South America, and drought in Indonesia.

An El Niño event may significantly diminish ocean productivity off the west coast by limiting weather patterns that cause upwelling, or nutrient circulation in the ocean. These nutrients are the foundation of a vibrant marine food web and could negatively impact food sources for several types of birds, fish and marine mammals.

New H1N1 Virus -- says hhs.gov

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (www.hhs.gov) posted an immediate press release with Obama Administration calling on the nation to begin planning and preparing for fall flu season and the new H1N1 virus.

The Obama Administration sent a strong message to the nation today that it is time to start planning and preparing for the fall flu season and the ongoing H1N1 flu outbreak and that the federal government is prepared to commit resources, training, and new tools to help state and local governments and America’s families get ready.

White House Homeland Security Advisor John Brennan, Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius, Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano, Secretary of Education Arne Duncan joined with delegations from 54 states, tribes and territories today at the H1N1 Influenza Preparedness Summit at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md., to kick-off the government’s nation-wide fall flu preparedness efforts.

Throughout the one-day summit, Administration officials laid out specific ways that states and local governments could start their planning and preparation efforts and announced new programs and resources to help state and local governments, the medical community and every day America prepare for H1N1 and the fall flu season.

First, HHS will make available preparedness grants worth a total of $350 million. These grants were funded by Congress in the latest supplemental appropriations bill and they will give state and local public health offices and health care systems valuable resources to step up their preparedness efforts.

Second, the federal government will centralize communications about H1N1 and seasonal flu on the federal government’s new Web site www.flu.gov. This one-stop comprehensive site brings together flu-related information from across HHS and other federal agencies. The expanded site builds on the pandemic planning information long presented on www.pandemicflu.gov, and incorporates information about the novel H1N1 flu as well as the seasonal flu.

Finally, HHS is launching a new PSA campaign contest to encourage more Americans to get involved in the nation’s flu preparedness efforts by making a 15-second or 30-second PSA. Officials at the summit stressed the idea of “shared responsibility” when it comes to combating the flu and the goal of the new HHS PSA campaign contest is to tap into the nation’s creativity to help educate Americans about how to plan for and prevent the spread of H1NI influenza. HHS will evaluate submissions and will present the best PSAs back to the public so everyone can vote on their favorite submission. The winning PSA will receive $2,500 in cash and will appear on national television. Contest details as well more information about the larger effort to plan and prepare for the flu season are available at www.flu.gov.

Note: All HHS press releases, fact sheets and other press materials are available at http://www.hhs.gov/news.

Making sand castles may cause gastrointestinal illness

In a recent study from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the Environmental Protection Agency, children and adults who build castles and dig in the sand at the beach are at greater risk of developing gastrointestinal diseases and diarrhea than people who only walk on the shore or swim in the surf.

People who playfully bury their bodies in the sand are at even greater risk, according to the study published online recently in the American Journal of Epidemiology. It also shows children, who are more likely than adults to play with and possibly get sand in their mouths, stand the greatest chance of becoming ill after a day at the beach.

The study is based on interviews with more than 27,000 people who visited seven freshwater and marine beaches in the agency’s National Epidemiological and Environmental Assessment of Recreational Water Study (NEEAR) between 2003 and 2005 as well as in 2007. All beaches in the study had sewage treatment plant discharges within seven miles, although the source of sand pollution was unknown and could have included urban runoff as well as wild and domestic animal contamination. Water quality at the beaches was within acceptable limits, said Chris Heaney, Ph.D., a postdoctoral epidemiology student at UNC’s Gillings School of Global Public Health and lead author of the study.

People should not be discouraged from enjoying sand at the beach, but should take care to use a hand sanitizer or wash their hands after playing in the sand.

People were asked about their contact with sand on the day they visited the beach (digging in the sand or whether they were buried in it). Then, 10 to 12 days later, participants were telephoned and asked questions about any health symptoms they had experienced since the visit.

Researchers found evidence of gastrointestinal illnesses, upper respiratory illnesses, rash, eye ailments, earache and infected cuts. Diarrhea and other gastrointestinal illnesses were more common in about 13 percent of people who reported digging in sand, and in about 23 percent of those who reported being buried in sand.

The Valley Swim Club -- a racist place!

If you are black, never ever enter The Valley Swim Club, a children's camp in inner-city Philadelphia! Here is what happened according to reports: A black group arrived at the pool and started swimming (take note that they were children). Other "white" members immediately exited the pool and one "white" parent even said "Uh, what are all these black kids doing here? I'm scared they might do something to my child." Shortly after, pool attendants instructed the "black" children to leave. How would you call that?

John Duesler, the president of The Valley Swim Club, explained that the decision was made not based on race, but rather that he disliked the dynamics large groups brought to the pool. Really? After the "whites" complained!

I checked the rules of the The Valley Swim Club posted online, and nothing, NOTHING, is mentioned about forbidding groups to use the pool! Now, that people are angry, I'm sure they are editing the rules and policies of the club. They probably will add this: "The Valley Swim Club: No Blacks, No Minorities"

John Duesler, you have kicked out kids, not teenagers! What harm could these kids do that you have to discriminate them based on skin color?

Southwest Airlines cheapest flights

Since the economic times have been affecting every U.S. company, airlines are forced to lower down airfares to encourage people to travel. Southwest Airlines is offering today cheap flights through its "Every city on sale" ticket promo.

Southwest Airlines is giving huge discounts for tickets bought online by midnight tonight, July 8, 2009. For those travelers who have just read this and planning to travel between Sept. 9 and Nov. 18, you still have time to buy your Southwest Airlines discounted ticket fares.
The fare promotion, along with other sales launched by fellow low-fare carriers Frontier Airlines Inc. and AirTran Airways Inc., marked an early – and deep – start to the airline industry's annual efforts to fill their airplanes in the slower travel period that begins after Labor Day.

Southwest structured its sale based on the distance flown – one-way fares of $30 for trips of up to 400 miles, $60 for 400 to 750 miles and $90 for more than 750 miles. That offers a significant discount from the usual nonsale tickets sold several weeks in advance.

I hope other airlines, like American Airlines Inc and United Airlines will follow Southwest Airlines strategy and offer cheap airfare.
